Hi steiner
Have you tried a search on Scotlands People to find out how many likely hits there are? There are 110 James Thom*sons in Scotland aged between 24-27 in 1861
Thomson is a very freqently occuring surname so you may have a bit of a search on your hands with so little info.

Where have you found his name? - death? marriage? There may be other ways of narrowing the options down for him before going off an on lengthy census search.
Was he married by 1861? If so, when, where, who did he marry?
Had he any children by 1861?

Best wishes
Lesley

thanks for reply - youre right there a few of them!

Someone at work said that Ancestry could search using occupation - blacksmith.

No other info I'm afraid - what I had came from an old letter.

A blanket search for a James Thomson, Blacksmith (no age) brings up one born 1839 at Arbroath and living at Blythswood, Barony with his parents Stephen and Elizabeth. Does this mean anything?

Just throwing out some more possibilities:

There's a James Thomson born abt 1833 in Glasgow who is living in Hutchesontown in 1861. He is an engine smith... would that do? He has a wife Mary and a son Joseph, age 4.

Otherwise, age even farther off is a James Thomson, born abt 1827 in Glasgow who is a "Working Blacksmith" in Glasgow St David. He has a wife Margaret and a daughter Margaret, age 9.

There is also a James Thomas, Smith, born abt 1831 in Glasgow, who is in Blythswood with sisters Margaret and Sarah. The head of household is his aunt Elizabeth Gray, age 73.

That's the best I can do...

Sarah

- not sure if you are aware, and apologies if you are, that "Blythswood, Barony" is in Glasgow.. (as is Hutchesontown )

There is a marriage in 1863 of 27 year old James Thomson blacksmith journeyman and 26 year old Dorothy Robertson mn Turnbull dressmaker. The MC can be veiwed at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and you can learn their parent details from it. You'll find it indexed as:

1863 THOMSON JAMES TURNBULL DOROTHY ROBERTS CLYDE GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/05 0111

Looks like his mum was remarried to a EWING as some point. Her DC is found indexed like so:

1872 THOMSON ELIZABETH EWING SEMPLE F 52 HIGH CHURCH GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/02 1161

Best wishes
