What happened to James and Agnes Bryce in 1851

Post by gayze » Wed Apr 08, 2009 7:33 am

I have James and Agnes Bryce in the 1841 Census with their family...at .1 North Clyde St..Barony St Marks Lanarkshire 622
James Bryce abt 1801 Scotland
Agnes Bryce Wife abt 1801 Scotland
Agnes Bryce abt 1829 Lanarkshire, Scotland
Archd Bryce abt 1818 Lanarkshire, Scotland
Helen Bryce abt 1823 Lanarkshire, Scotland
James Bryce abt 1821 Lanarkshire, Scotland
Mary Bryce Wife abt 1821 Lanarkshire, (wife of Archibald)
Mary Bryce abt 1826 Lanarkshire,

In the 1861 Census the rest of the children have moved, escept for Archibald (widowed) and they are living in 132 Picadilly St..Anderston

Agnes Bryce 70 born Glasgow Lanarkshire
Archibald Bryce43
James Bryce 64 born Diddlerth, Edinburgh (Duddingston)

I have searched every possible spelling I can think of but I cannot find them in 1851....I have looked for each of the family separately, but have had no luck....
Can anyone please suggest how else I could find them
hanks if you can help

Hi Gay,
Welcome to Talking Scot!

There is a James Bryce in Salford, Manchester in 1851 age 30. He is a power loom weaver, born in Scotland
Wife Margaret age 31, born Scotland
Children: John age 9, Agnes age 4 and Margaret age 2, all born Scotland

Next door are John and Mary Campbell with a visitor Agnes Bryce age 19, born in Scotland, a power loom weaver

Does this look like part of the family?

All the best,
Sarah

Hi again,

Not being able to find people in the Manchester area in 1851 rang a bell. See this topic, towards the end of the first page:

viewtopic.php?t=13328

The Ancestry comment for that census:

In addition, the census returns of the following localities have been damaged by water during storage. Most of the damaged pieces are in the area of Manchester.

If you think the above are two of James and Agnes' children, then it might well be that the rest of them were on one of the damaged pages.

Regards,
Sarah

Hi Sarah,
Yes thank you these are all my family..in Manchester...it is quite possible James and Agnes and others are on the missing pages...Mary Campbell (nee Bryce) my gggmther was heavily pregnant with first child and leaving Scotland forever..to come to Australia...
I think you have solved the problem for me about why they do not appear on the 1851 census..since they appear nowhere else....and I can move on to something else..
This is a great result for me.... :D ..Thank you

Gay,

All may not be lost! :)

If you go to http://www.1851-unfilmed.org.uk/records.htm
there is a full explanation of all the work done on this and where you can access it - online at www.findmypast.com

Hope this helps.
Best wishes,
Meg
Main family lines are Harpers from Midlothian, Fife & Kinross-shire, and Dobies/Dobbies from Midlothian. Also Strathearn, Stobie, Layden and Downie.

I tried this route as it was me who had the apparenty missing folks in 1851, but the records were not yet there on FMP.
(See towards the end of the second page on the topic mentioned above
viewtopic.php?t=13328&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15 )
http://www.1851-unfilmed.org.uk/records.htm
There is a also a name search there, from which you can click to see the other names on the page.
All is maybe not lost, but it appears to be in limbo....

best wishes
Lesley

 Sorry Lesley, that'll teach me to go jumping into a topic before reading the whole thread!
Sorry you weren't lucky; I was lucky enough to find some of mine. But I'm sure it wasn't on FMP; it was on the old site - familyhistoryonline? - which was incorporated into FMP?
I really should keep better records of my sources ..............

Best wishes,
Meg

Yes, from what Trish said I gatherd that was the case, and you could access them before (on a payper view basis I seem to remember). They seem to have fallen into a black hole for the moment....

I got my hopes up too when I saw they should be on FMP but was then puzzled when I just could not find them. :?

Best wishes

Thanks for the searches and the glimmer of hope..

I checked.. http://www.1851-unfilmed.org.uk/intro.htm and I see that their work is now concluded...as of October 2008...so it seems that's the end of it...
It now leaves me free to fantasise about their whereabouts that day.
Thanks a lot
