Elizabeth CARANNY U 20 F Neilston Boarder Print Field Worker
Catherine SHORTHAND U 15 F Greenock Boarder Print Field Worker
Jeanie O'DONNELL 1 m F Dumbarton Adopted
Jean O’Donnell was the illegitimate daughter of Bridget O’Donnell listed above born 27th Feb 1881.
On her death certificate her mother is listed as Bridget O’Donnell. Bridget’s sister Jane was the informant on the birth certificate.
In the 1891 census aged 10 yrs she is living with her Aunt Kate and in the 1901 census aged 20 yrs Jeanie is living with her mother Bridget.
Why then would she be listed as "Adopted" in the relationship to Head in the census? Does Adopted have another meaning in this context?

Given what you have found after 1881, no meaning.Wee Wung wrote:Extract from 1881 census

Either Hannah or the enumerator was stumped by how to categorise the child of a boarder. Jeanie should have been entered as "Boarder", just as she was along with her mother in the 1901 census entry.
