That's correct, - it's only the number and sex of previous children, and whether living or dead that's recorded, - no names, - e.g. 1 boy and 3 girls living, and 2 girls dead (or deceased).

A significant proportion of registrars counted the child being registered as in the total number shown, although it was supposed to be children other than the child being registered.

Alexander Stewart 1855

Post by Jack » Fri Aug 19, 2005 11:59 am

Hi Maggie,

Been offline for a wee while - ISP problems, and am now catching up on all the posts!
The marriage & birth below are in the IGI.
--
ALEXANDER STEWART
ELIZABETH ELDER
Marriage: 13 JUL 1849 Barony, Lanark, Scotland
--
This was the birth i was looking at, but possibly not registered till 1856?

ALEXANDER STEWART - Birth: 21 DEC 1855 Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Father: ALEXANDER STEWART
Mother: ELIZABETH ELDER
--
But i'm only guessing that father Alexander's wife is Elizabeth ELDER - DCs of them, and / or MCs, DCs of children should tell whether or not.

Jack

ps - Jane's 1862 BC should give when her parents married - hopefully it's as 1849 above.
JANE RUSSELL STEWART - Birth: 07 NOV 1862 Hutchesontown, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
