1871 SCOTLAND CENSUS
MY ANCESTOR WILLIAM BUCHANAN
AGED 24 CALTON DISTRICT
1881 SCOTLAND CENSUS
MY ANCESTOR WILLIAM BUCHANAN
AGED 55 CALTON DISTRICT
IS IT POSSIBLE THAT HIS AGE IS INCORRECT.
OTHERWISE THEY WOULD HAVE HAD 3 CHILDREN IN THEIR 50'S
THANKYOU - KAY

Have you viewed the original census image or are you simply taking the age data from an indexing? If you are very certain you have the correct household in both years then my first hunch tells me that someone has misread the enumerator's handwriting. In other words 3's can look alot like 5's.
Best wishes

I think that's what happened Jean - according to the 1881 census discs he is 35.

To Jean and Annette
You two are amazing - I took the info off Ancestry.Com - so I really need to look at SP Census for more reliable results!!!!!

Ancestry transcriptions are a nightmare! According to their reckoning, my 3x great grandfather was 11 when he had his first child! Duh! (They made him 21 when he was clearly 41!)
