Can anyone with sharp eyes make any headway with the entry for Jemimah McLeod, who is the 5th person in the 5th household - if that makes sense. I am particularly interested in the relationship to the head of household (Andrew Mackie?) her age and occupation. I can just about make out her birthplace as Inverurie unless its wishful thinking, because that is why I am interested in her.

In 1891 a 5 year old Jemimah McLeod is listed in my gggrandmother's household as "grand-daughter", born Inverurie, but I have no idea where she sprang from and I can't find her birth so I'm wondering if she is illegitimate and registered under another name. But I can't find her under the family name (Lamb) either, assuming she is the child of one of the daughters. In 1906 she turns up at the wedding of one of her "aunts" as witness, but there is only 10 years between them in age. Clutching at straws here in my search for some sort of lead!
Many thanks
Maisie

Hi Maisie,
I assume you posted a census image in the gallery that has not been approved yet? However, from what you say, I gather it is a 1901 census and that Jemima should be about 15. The only one I see that matches is a Jemimah McLeod, born Inverurie, who is listed as a "Servant" in the household of Andrew MacKie in Old Meldrum. Sorry, that doesn't help you figure out who she is, does it?
Regards,
Sarah
P.S. You beat me to it this time, Annette!

Thanks Annette (and Sarah)
So if she's a servant this won't get me very far with her parents. The Jemima McLeod born 1886 isn't the right one unfortunately. I made a list of all *mima* M*Leods in the 1891 census and cross referred them to the births and they all matched except mine. This one has cost me a fortune on SP!
What is more frustrating is that my late aunt, born 1922, claimed that she remembered visiting a "Mima" in Dundee who was married to an engine driver called Paterson and was some sort of relative but it wasn't spoken about, but that was just one of the pieces of information I couldn't make sense of until it was too late to ask her more. Needless to say, before you ask, I can't find a M*Leod/Pa*erson marriage either!!!!

Hi Sarah
You are a genius, but not for the reason you thought! That one turned out to be ms McDonald, but you made me think about other wildcards and ways of looking.
I found her listed as having died <after 1958> in Dundee. Which is where I was living at the time, believe it or not.
And guess what, Jemima McLeod Thomson was born in Inverurie in 1885.
Now to get the certifcates.
I just love you guys who can't resist a challenge!

A postscript. Many ££££ lighter at SP it turns out that young Jemimah's mother was a previously unknown illegitimate daughter of my gggrandmother, and not one of her daughters as I had suspected. I eventually found the mother aged 2 residing with her grandmother and was able to pinpoint the correct birth from that.
So that gives me 5 women in that line all with illegitmate daughters all of whom were known by or given the surname of the alleged father. No wonder I can never find anyone!
Thanks once again.
