1851 census

Post by steiner » Mon Jun 01, 2009 12:42 pm

Looking for gunpowder worker Alexander Ferguson born Dunoon about 1809 and his wife Christina and children living in Argyllshire in 1851.

His parents James and Janet Ferguson may also still be alive. - aged over 65.

Alexander died in 1855 along with a son in an explosion at the Clyde Powder mills according to family story they are buried in Kilmun - wonder if there is a stone?

Any help appreciated - kind regards

A search on SP shows a 38 yearold Alexander Ferguson + a Christina at Kilmun in 1851.

Have you looked at that record?

Do you have the death records for the father and son? if in 1855 they will hold a wealth of information.

I didn't look at it myself, but you should find it with little difficulty on ScotlandsPeople when you go looking for the death record.

Freecen didn't have anything that looked likely - but the might not cover that area at present.

Andy,

There is another son, Robert, who shows up on the 1861 Census. He was born about 1854.

Mom and daughter were both born in Strathlachlin, Argyleshire. Makes me think Christina went home to her own mother's house to have Margaret.

Did you ever get the death cert. for Alexander? I'm curious which son it was who was supposed to have died in the explosion with Alexander?

Hi

I did get Alexander's death certificate. Lots of information. The other Ferguson was not his son but a nephew we think.
