The Pinterton Agency - "Gorbals to Gettysburg"

Post by Lorna Allison » Sun Jun 14, 2009 9:13 pm

Hi

Having read article "Gorbals to Gettysburg" on Allan Pinkerton in one of yesterday's papers I thought I would look up his birth registration in Gorbals only to discover that the image is completely back to front. That's a new one for me, however no doubt they will respond to my call for help.

Imagine a Gorbals laddie, Chartist activist, taking himself off to America to avoid retribution, ending up best chum with Abe Lincoln and founding the agency that was precursor to the FBI.

A bit disappointing that he was instrumental in the arrest and hanging of 6 of the "Molly Maguires" who were fighting for largely the same cause he had fought for in the Chartist movement back home. Thirty years on and viewpoints change

Interesting I have Pinkertons in my line & I often wondered if there was a connection.
My Pinkertons were a sad lot -wife widowed young with several children.A few die young she dies & then her fifteen year old is killed down the Pit.
I would be interested in his origins.

Hi Joette

His parents are William Pinkerton and Isobel McQueen. I haven't done any more looking yet, but I may not get any more than that info from the OPR when I receive the corrected image. Had just thought I might find out what Pa did.

Birth, from Search page:

29/08/1819: Pinkerton, Allan; William Pinkerton & Isobel McQueen; Gorbals; Glasgow City/Lanark; GROS: 644/002 0020 0107.

If I get any more I shall pass it on.

Regards

Lorna

Hello Lorna and Joette,

There’s a Plethora of Pinkerton’s in these Pinkerton Resource Pages including all about Allan Pinkerton’s father towards the bottom of this one and much more scattered about in great detail. http://www.geocities.com/heartland/prai ... tons_4.htm

Hello Alan

As ever, that is brilliant and thanks so much. It has made fascinating reading. I am left aghast at the picture of Glasgow in the 1750s-1800s. I thought that it would be bad but, 23 brothels & 3 shebeens in one close! Can see how Allan Pinkerton knew how to deal with the wild west scene.

Hello Joette

Alan has provided everything I need to know. Happy hunting with your Pinkertons.

By the way, BrightSolid came back to me to say that they could find nothing wrong with my image and to try again. I did and got correct image :?
I know I got a mirror image, I showed it to my husband, I know | did . . . . . . . . .

Regards
