Forresters of Glasgow .....

Post by Margaret » Wed Aug 03, 2005 4:40 am

Hello to all on census forum, I have just started looking at my Mum's mothers side of the family and I was wondering if someone could look at the 1861 census for me please to see if there is a mention of a
Forrester family in Wellington Street, Glasgow. My Grannie was born in 1864 and the only other info I have is that is was at Wellington Street, Glasgow. Many thanks for any help available.
:)
Cheers

Hello Margaret,

Have you tried searching for your Grannie's birth entry in 1864 and then the 1871 census on SP? You should be able to find lots of info from both of these.

Hi Margaret,

What are your granny's parents' names? Birthplaces? Any siblings born pre 1861?

Jack

Hello Jack,
I have just found out that my Granny's parents were John Forrester and Agnes Stewart and my Granny's name was Elizabeth Stewart Forrester she married John Miller in 1884 in glasgow. I have just found her on the IGI and she was born on the 29 April 1864, Hutchesontown, Glasgow. I can find no other siblings at this point, still searching.
Thanks Jack
Cheers

Hi Margaret,

The IGI gives plenty siblings. The first group are extracted from the records (OPRs to 1854 and civil records from 1855).
  • AGNES MAITLAND FORRESTER - Birth: 13 NOV 1846 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
THOMAS MILLER FORRESTER - Birth: 11 NOV 1855 Clyde, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
MARGARET FORRESTER - Birth: 05 NOV 1857 Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
GEORGE FORRESTER - Birth: 12 MAR 1860 Hutchesontown, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
JANE FORRESTER - Birth: 12 NOV 1861 Hutchesontown, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
ELIZABETH STEWART FORRESTER - Birth: 29 APR 1864 Hutchesontown, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
MARY MILLER FORRESTER - Birth: 12 APR 1866 Hutchesontown, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
You have one from the bonus year of 1855. The 1855 birth certificate should give more information than others. All of the 1855 to 1866 birth certificates should be available on the ScotlandsPeople website.

The second group are LDS submission entries on the IGI (including some duplicates of those in the first list).
  • Agnes Maitland Forrester - Birth: 13 NOV 1846 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
John Edward Forrester - Birth: 31 OCT 1848 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
William Forrester - Birth: 23 AUG 1850 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Edward Robertson Forrester - Birth: 19 FEB 1852 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Jane Pollack Forrester - Birth: 21 SEP 1853 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
John Pollock FORRESTER - Birth: 21 SEP 1853 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
These were found using a parent search on the IGI. On the form enter only the parents' names in the boxes on the top right, and the region "British Isles" (Event = "All" and Country = "All Countries"). Leave all of the other boxes blank.

Glasgow parish is one of many where only the female births are shown on the online version of the IGI. It may well be that the boys' births are in the OPRs, but they do not appear on the onlne index. That could be confirmed using ScotlandsPeople index (before the payment stage) - they should be there if they are in the OPRs. Until such time as the OPR images appear online at ScotlandsPeople, you can see the OPRs at LDS Family History Centres - they can order the microfilm in for you for a fee.

Another LDS submission gives the marriage of JOHN FORRESTER and AGNES STEWART 24 APR 1846 in Glasgow.

I have a feeling thet Jane Pollack Forrester is a mistaken LDS submission (mistaken for John). Had she been correct, then she would probably have appeared on the online IGI.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hi Margaret

Couldn't resist jumping in and helping out a bit. I believe this is your Elizabeth with parents and siblings on the 1881 census

Dwelling: 118 Rose St
Census Place: Govan, Lanark, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0203669 GRO Ref Volume 644-11 EnumDist 9 Page 17
Marr Age Sex Birthplace
John FORRESTER M 60 M Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Head
Occ: Chain Maker
Agnes FORRESTER M 55 F Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Wife
John FORRESTER U 27 M Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Son
Occ: Private In 1st Class Army Reserve Wood Sawyer
Thomas FORRESTER U 25 M Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Son
Occ: Engine Fitter
Margaret FORRESTER U 23 F Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Daur
Occ: Power Loom Weaver
Elizabeth FORRESTER 16 F Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Daur
Occ: Sewing Machine Polisher
Mary FORRESTER 14 F Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Daur
Occ: Scholar

If you run a parent search on the IGI (which you can access through our Sources button at the top of the page) you will find a long list of possible children. I'm not sure yet if they are all your but using the names from this census you will be able to pick out the ones that belong with your family. THe details on the BC of Thomas will be a bonus as he was born in 1855 and should give info on how many births came before 1855 :D

Hope this helps a bit

Best wishes
Jean

PS...am about to push the SUBMIT button and see AndrewP has beaten me a bit...ah well....

Dear Jean and Andrew
What gems you both are, so much help. :D I must be doing something really wrong when I go to the IGI as I didnt get any of those responses. So now I am off to try again and follow Jean's instuctions to the letter and see what I can find. Looks like the ironing waits for another day as i put all this information into my tree, and now I will be able to go look and download the certificates. I hope in months to come I can be a wee bit of help to others, as I have found since joining Talking Scot people have been wonderful. I am coming to Scotland in 2007, for a family gathering in Glasgow, so now will be able to look up some of the places my family were.
Once again eveyone a million thanks
Cheers
