James Comrie of Kilsyth.

Post by Jas » Mon Aug 17, 2009 9:21 am

I am trying to trace my paternal Grandfather James (Jas) Comrie b.1878 in Killsyth,Stirlingshire. He was a miner and came to England around 1911.He married Isabella Smith in 1912 and lived in Distington,Cumberland. I have the family on the Scottish 1891 census living at 40,Newtown,Kilsyth, but then they all disappear and I would love to discover how Jas spent his time from 1891 through until 1912. His father was David Comrie, a stonemason ,and his mother Margaret Anderson.

Hello and welcome to Talking Scot Jas,

Although ages are a bit out I think this is them in 1901 still at the same address -

Mr David Connie 47
James Connie 22 Miner
Jeanie Connie 17
David Connie 17
Daniel Connie 15
John Connie 13
Maggie Connie 11
Christina Connie 7

They are indexed as Comrie at SP.

Annette

Hi Jas,

A welcome from me too.

My remaining 10 credits for the 1911 England census were just to expire and I had no-one I needed to find right now, so I had a look for your chap. He is in Distington, but is shown as a widower. So, sometime between 1901 and 1911 he got married, but whether in Scotland or England is one of those wee mysteries!

Although shown as a boarder, I'd be tempted to look for a marriage to a McLean first, just in case Charles Knox McLean is actually his brother-in-law.

1911 Census

Name: Relationship to head: Marital Status: Years married: Sex: Age in 1911: Occupation: Where born:

MCLEAN, CHARLES KNOX HEAD MARRIED M 32 COAL MINER HEWER RUTHERGLEN LANARKSHIRE
MCLEAN, JESSIE WIFE MARRIED 6 YRS F 35 DISTINGTON CUMBERLAND
MCLEAN, WILLIAM SON M 1 DISTINGTON CUMBERLAND
COMRIE, JAMES BOARDER WIDOWER M 33 COAL MINER HEWER KILSYTH STIRLINGSHIRE

COMRIE JAMES (RG14PN31479 RG78PN1808 RD577 SD1 ED5 SN126)
Address MAIN STREET DISTINGTON CUMB County Cumberland
District Whitehaven Subdistrict Harrington
Enumeration District 5 Parish Distington

I hope this gets you closer.

Hello Mary and Jas,

A James Comrie married Helen Clelend at Kilsyth in 1902.

There is a death indexed at SP of a Helen Clelland/Comrie at Kilsyth in 1905. :(

Worth a look?

Regards,
Annette

Nice one, Annette.

Looks very likely to me. Maybe the McLeans were just friends and/or landlords in 1911.
