Hi to all at TS,
I am looking for help from anyone with access to Ancestry especially census info. I am trying to trace back my Rankin side of the family to see where they originated. William below is the farthest I can go back. The second John born 9/3/1844 is my gt gt grandfather. William and Mary Adams were married 11/8/1837 in Calton Glasgow. I have the parish record but this is all the info it gives. (Her name is Adam rather than Adams on it).
I thought the 1851 census would be a good starting point but found nothing in the Freecen which matched the names. On SP there are a lot of William and Mary Rankin’s in Glasgow and it would take loads of tries never mind credits to look at them all.
On John Rankin’s death cert it has his father William as bricklayer – also the F stands for Ferguson and appears throughout the family.
Husband
William F. Rankin
Birth: About 1811 Of, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Wife
Mary Adams
Birth: About 1814 Of, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
children
Lynn Rankin Pedigree Male
Birth: 20 NOV 1837 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
John Rankin Pedigree Male
Birth: 04 JUL 1840 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
John Rankin Pedigree Male
Birth: 09 MAR 1844 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Ann Rankin Pedigree Female
Birth: 04 JAN 1845 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Marion Rankin Pedigree Female
Birth: 04 SEP 1848 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Mary Rankin Pedigree Female
Birth: 01 OCT 1850 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Any help in finding the same family together would be great – I would then look at the SP census results.
Thanks
Ailsa

Hi All,
Someone kindly pm'd me and pointed me in the right direction but for
once the census i purchased does not really give me much to go on. Usually it tells you more detail about the area in Glasgow. This one does not have a street name - it just says in the parish of St John burgh of Glasgow.
William head marr 35 bricklayer born Lanarkshire Glasgow
Mary wife marr 33 " "
Ann daug 11 " "
Jean " 9 " "
John son 6 " "
Marion daug 2 " "
Janet " 5mnth " "
Anyway since writing the above - i had to top up my credits and took a chance with a William F Rankin's death cert who died in 1892 age 76 but for some reason died in Cambuslang not Glasgow. It was him - bricklayer widower of Mary Adam and gives me his father George (dairyman) and Agnes m.s FERGUSON so that's where the name comes from - hooray.
The witness was a son in law looks like John Horn.
Just goes to show that sometimes you have to take a chance.
Regards to all,
Ailsa

Thanks Elisabeth,
I did have the 1851census as you know but not the street name. Thanks for the 1861. No Jean (who could have left home or died) she would have been 19, and two new children Mary and Agnes. It makes it clearer now for other censuses.
For your info the occupation for John is Iron Turner.
Regards
Ailsa

Following from Annette's post
John Horn married Jane Rankin 31 Oct 1862 Carlton, Glasgow
This looks to be 1871
Reg No 652/3 Calderbank Old Monkland Lanark
21 Post office Row
John Horn 32 head born Kilsyth Stirlingshire Coal Miner
Jane Horn 27 wife born Glasgow
James Horn 8
William Horn 2
(missing Elizabeth b. 1867)
John Horn (iron puddler) age 23 is living with his mother Elizabeth also Janet Horn, James Horn and David Kerr - 18 Shamrock St Glasgow Govan Lanark in 1861. I cannot easily see Jane/Jean in 1861

Many thanks to Trish and Annette and other helpers for all your input. I have filed this extra "Horn " info away for future tree research.
My aim for the moment is to go back as far as i can on my mother's paternal lines including their wives details.
My mother is 83 and lives in Glasgow and her only brother is 85 and lives in Canada. I have bought some charts and i am trying to finish them soon for obvious reasons!
I have nearly finished one half of their parents - the Hardies - i got back to John Hardie born Dallas Moray22/12/1786 and his wife Janet Gilfillan - they married 31/5/1813 but i cannot find Janet's birth details.
The other side - The Rankin family - who you are kindly helping me at the moment is nearly there. I now will be looking for William Ferguson Rankin's wife Mary Adam or Adams birth and death details.
So i better go and do some housework and clear my head.
Regards
