BUCHANAN George 1851 census lookup

I have on an 1874 Australian Marriage Cert of John Robert and Mary (nee Hartle) Buchanan, his father listed as George Buchanan, Landed Proprietor and his mother as ? Elisabeth Jane Stewart/Stuart. John Robert born Dunbarton c. 1842. John went to Australia ? late 50s at a young age ? alone. Any help would be so much appreciated

What are you trying to find?
Where John Robert was from?
When he went to Austrailia? - I'm not sure if your question mark means that you are not sure if he went to Austrailia at that point or whether it is the date you are unsure of.

First you need to tell us a few things -
Have you tried a parent search on IGI? Or a search fro his birth?
Have you tried finding the family in the 1851 census in Scotland?
If not, those would be the logical places to try first.

Lesley, thanks for the response. What I need is a record of Johns Birth and his parents names confirmed. I have already stated his birthplace Dunbarton and approx year of birth 1842. And yes I have tried IGI with no success. So I was hoping some kind soul may have access to the 1851 census to confirm this please.

Sorry - I read your post, but omitted to read its title - you had already stated what it was you were looking for!

silly me....
The 1851 is not yet on Freecen for Dunbarton which is a pity. You may be able to search on Ancestry for free at your local library but I'm not sure if this is the case in NZ... it may be worth chekcing as it is a very useful resource, especially when it is free!

I'm having a look on Scotlands People, just using the search to see what there is...

There is a John Buchanan, aged 8, in Dunbarton, Kilmaronock, with a George & an Elizabeth also on the same page...looking good - but no way of quickly finding what age the George is, or the Elizabeth or if it is your lad, without seeing it.

The Elizabeth is 43, ....the George appears to be 22, so not quite what I was expecting.

Maybe George senior has died and this is George, a son?? Only guessing - you can only find out so much playing with the searchpage!

I'm not seeing an OPR for either John's birth or his parents marriage. I'm also not finding a John Buchanan with parents George and Elizabeth born in Dunbarton on the 1851 census on Ancestry. There is this listing:

Stewart is a girl and all the Buchanan children were born in Greenock.

There is also a census listing which very intriguingly has a John Buchanan age 10 born in New South Wales along with sister Elizabeth. Sister Jessie was born in England. Mother is named Elizabeth Buchanan and they are living in Greenock again but their address is Galbreaths Heirs Land Open Shone (?). The Shone has to be an error. I'm not sure if this means that these people were Galbreath heirs or what. And it does have John making a round trip to Australia!

Hello again, I am still having no luck with my George Buchanan. I thought I had found him on the 1841Scotland Census and again on the 1851 Cheltenham census. Names matched, found John R as a child matching my dates with parents George and Elizabeth only to have it all in doubt when today some kind sole informs me the Elizabeth, wife of George is in fact a Bogle Smellie and not a Stewart so now back to square 1. To recap I have;
John Robert: born c1841-3, Loch Lomond. Arrived in Victoria Australia c 1858 no known details. Parents recorded on his 1874 Aus, marriage cert as George Buchanan, Scotland, Landed Proprietor and Elizabeth maiden name Stewart. On John Roberts 1919 Aus death cert his parents again recorded as George, Independent means and Elizabeth Jane Stewart.
Once again any help greatly appreciated I hopefully am not the only Buchanan desperate to trace this line......or am I?
