I'm trying hard not to get excited ................I've spent more money today  trying to check on the details of the Ross family I mentioned before from Fearn in the 1871 census. First I found a marriage of James Ross & Eliza Sutherland 25/11/1842 registered in Nigg, which doesn't necessarily help much but still all in the same area...... Then I searched for the births of other kids' mentioned on the census to confirm the parents names. I couldn't find Jean born about 1860 but I did find a Georgina born in Tarbat in 1865 who's parents were James Ross & Eliza Sutherland, so this fits exactly with the family I'm checking on. I'm so excited that after 4 years I might have found my g-grandfather George but now I've run out of credits on SP & can't spend anymore at the moment..................................so near & yet so far but I think I'm on the right track now =D>

Is there anyway I can attach a copy of the 1871 census record I have saved so people can see what I'm talking about??

Yes. Upload it into the TalkingScot Gallery. Once the image is "approved", it is allotted a URL (web address) which can then be posted here.

I am assuming the census page is in the original TIF format from ScotlandsPeople. Scanned images in JPG format are not always successful.

All the best,

Hi Hil

A parent search on the IGI give the following children to James Ross and Elizabeth Sutherland. I'm pretty sure this is the same family you have on the 1871 census and might even suggest that Johan might be on the census as Jean?.....Georgina and James certainly fit. As well as the large gap in ages beween Helen and Jean where it would be convenient to slip in two more babies...maybe Mary and Elizabeth?....and Mary being born in 1855 would tell you how many other babies the couple had. You would have to work a bit to figure out if Besy fits with this family or not but their marriage in 1842 would certainly tie in well with her DOB.

1. MARY ROSS - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 25 JAN 1855 Tarbat By Fearn, Ross And Cromarty, Scotland

2. GEORGINA ROSS - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 04 OCT 1865 Tarbat By Fearn, Ross And Cromarty, Scotland

3. JAMES ROSS - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 17 MAY 1862 Tarbat By Fearn, Ross And Cromarty, Scotland

4. JOHAN ROSS - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 27 OCT 1859 Tarbat By Fearn, Ross And Cromarty, Scotland

5. BESY ROSS - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 30 NOV 1843 Nigg, Ross And Cromarty, Scotland

6. ELIZABETH ROSS - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 19 JUN 1857 Alness, Ross And Cromarty, Scotland

Also interesting to note the two adjacent Ross families on the 1871 census page.....maybe another generation?

My money is riding on this George being yours. \:D/

Best wishes
Jean

The situation is very suggestive of George A being an illegitimate son of a daughter of James ROSS and Elizabeth SUTHERLAND, his father being a MITCHELL.

Hello all,

I'd go along with this family too. A quick check on SP shows the death of a Mary ROSS in 1855 who was also born in 1855.

There was a couple of deaths of a George Ross (one child and one elderly) who died between 1870 and 1871 in the parish. Perhaps Christina changed Alexander's name in memory if they were related.
