But the question is, how whould I find out who lived at the house during a census?
I know that in 1895 my GG Grandmother lived at No5 Knock Lane in Whitehills, Banff. I just cannot find where she was although I have a few leads on that. I was just looking to see if there was any connection with the family or the extended family, who lived at the address a few years before this in 1891.
I've tried freecen but no joy there and I can't see how to do an address search on SP. Is there "another way"?
Thanks
Gordon

I haven't looked at your previous posts for names you might be looking for but I remember looking at this census record before.
Knock Street -
Elspet Stevenson 58 laundress born Boyndie
William Stevenson 21
Frank Stevenson 16
Jemima Stevenson 10
Is this who you're looking for?
Searching for Knock Lane (at Ancestry - you can't search for and address at SP except in 1881) gives nothing. There seems only to be a Knock Street.

Annette

Hi Annette,
many thanks for the prompt response
In short, I'm not sure if whoever lived at that address in 1891 has any connection with Jane Robertson who I know to be living there in 1894/5.
I have unearther an RCE from 1895 where Jane is seeking paternity for Elizabeth Robertson (b1883) and her address is given as 5 Knock Lane. I have no record of her being at this address apart from the RCE so I was wondering if any of her extended family may have been there. She is (as some on this forum have already discovered) a very elusive person and to have an address for her is a speck of gold dust for me.
I don't think the Stevenson family have any connection at this point in time....although she did marry a Stevenson and live in Ord some years later so it may have a bearing.
Were they the occupants of 5 Knock Lane?

Hello Gordon,
There’s a Knock Street, a Knock Avenue, a Loch Lane, a Knock Lane and a Loch Street all next to each other in Whitehills. It could be very confusing. http://maps.google.com/maps?t=h&hl=en&i ... 03042&z=18
If you can find someone living in the street in 1881 you could search for that person, and all the neighbours on the page image, in 1891, and if any of them are at the same address maybe No. 5 will show up on the page?
But, there don’t appear to be any Knock Lanes on the 1881 LDS?
In a previous thread you said “I have just viewed the 1871 census return with William Robertson and Jane/Jean in Boyndie. To my absolute amazement the village is Whitehills, Knock Lane to be precise.”
Try searching for the 1871 neighbours in 1891. Maybe they’re still living in Knock Lane. You never know your luck.
Probably no help at all,
Alan

Reading your responses has given me cause for embarrasment. Alan has hit the spot by highlighting the fact that there are so many streets in Whitehills with very similar names and I am left having to say that I have posted the wrong addressIn a previous thread you said “I have just viewed the 1871 census return with William Robertson and Jane/Jean in Boyndie. It is No5 Loch Lane and not Knock Lane. They are two different streets (although not very far apart) and having people living in both has confused my infinitessimally small brain.
William Robertson lived with his daughter Jane in 1871 in Knock Lane but in 1885 Jane is living in Loch Lane but she doesn't appear on any census at that address. I just thought it would be a good X-ref if I could eliminate the occupants on the census returns on either side of her occupancy. Or perhaps there could be another piece of the jigsaw of her scattered life buried there somewhere.
I am surprised that there does not seem to be the facility to search the 1881 and 1891 census returns by the address only.
This is strange as Knock Lane is still there to this day. I've written to one of the present occupiers whose house was once occupied by some of my rellies! But, there don’t appear to be any Knock Lanes on the 1881 LDS?
Sorry for the confusion
Gordon

Hi Gordon
(You can access Ancestry for free at the Mitchell and other Glasgow Libraries. )
Best wishes
Lesley
You can search the 1881 by address on SP, or using the LDS census disks, or you can search both by address using the Ancestry transcriptions.I am surprised that there does not seem to be the facility to search the 1881 and 1891 census returns by the address only

Nobody jumping at out me in 1891 but 1901 gives a couple of Robertson families. Unfortunately the households aren't numbered.
Margaret Robertson 43
Catherine Robertson 19
William D Robertson 12
Jessie A Robertson 10
Helen S Robertson 8
Williamina Robertson 7
Gordon Robertson 5
And the other-
Elizabeth Robertson 61
Margaret S Robertson 24
Regards,
Annette
Later....................Elizabeth was living at 5 Loch lane in 1881 (she was in hospital in 1891). her maiden name was Smith and her husband was William.
Later again.....................

I think that clinches it that William, the brick and tile maker is Jean's father.Susan wrote:Hi Gordon
Just came across the same Jean Robertson that Karen found. She is with William Robertson age 33 in Boyndie, which is William's home town. He is a brick & tile maker which ties in with the William lodging with the Stewart family in Huntly in 1861.
William has a son William Robertson with Elisabeth Smith in Boyndie in 1869, they then marry in October 1871 and William dies aged 43 in February 1881. In the census a couple of months later Elisabeth is shown as a Tile Makers widow and is living with 3 children, William 12, Alexander 9 and Margaret 4.
This does then look the most likely William to be the father of Jane/Jean.
Regards
Susan.

Woo Hoo
I've just extracted the family in 1881 from SP and Elizabeth is at No5 Loch Lane with her three children, William Alexander and Margaret.
This confirms that Jane would have called this place home even though she seems to have been away for much of the time in service and having illegitimate children by various fathers
Thanks Annette as well for confirming that the family were still there in 1901. I didn't expect that.
The strange or possibly not so strange thing is that none of Janes illegitimate children seem to have been at this address.
Indeed the longest running mystery is the whereabouts of her first born son William Robertson b May 1880 in Whitehills. He seems to have vacated the planet as I have no further trace of him. I know he existed because he had three sons one of whom had a distinctive middle name so was quite easy to find. (James Hedley Robertson).
I'm still chuffed to have another link to Whitehills and now at least one part of the family seem to have some stability.
Regards to all

And I now have cement where once there was only sand....I think that clinches it that William, the brick and tile maker is Jean's father.

Reading through again and this jumped out at me
Please give me a clue which crystal ball you are using because whatever it is, it works and I'm in awe again. I've been there quite a lot recently!

Wish I did have a crystal ball to break down a couple of my own brick walls.
You say William born 1880 (you had Borham as a birthplace earlier) had sons. How do you know this William is the son of Jean/Jane Norrie/Robertson?

Annette
