1881 census .....

Post by jd0110748 » Mon Aug 08, 2005 5:04 pm

1881 census. My Great Grandmother, Rose Ann Gemmell a pauper, and my Grandmother Helen gemmell were both resident at the Govan Union Workhouse as listed on page 10 of 26 on users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/Govan/Govan1881.html but when searching on SP result it stated that last search found no matches . Ihave, checked some other residents with the same result. I have contacted SP for an answer. Does anyone know why these people do not appear? John . Researching Hall, Dickson, Munro, Gemmell, Roberts, Wightman etc

Hi John,

They certainly appear on the LDS CDs of the 1881 census, as below.
  • Institution: "Govan Combination Poorhouse Hospital Asylum"
    Census Place: Govan, Lanark, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0203687 GRO Ref Volume 646-1 EnumDist 45 Page 32
    Marr Age Sex Birthplace

Rose Ann Woods GEMMELL M 33 F Ireland
    Rel: Pauper
    Occ: Formely Straw Hat Maker

Helen GEMMELL 1 F Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
    Rel: Pauper
On that basis, they should appear on ScotlandsPeople.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hello john,

I just had a quick search on SP and they both appear. I just searched on their names (only Rose for Rose Ann) and ages and they both came up.

Hi John,

I notice that you're researching Halls and Dicksons. They wouldn't be in Ayrshire and Wigtownshire by any chance? My Grandmother is Maggie Hall and her parents are George Hall and Annie Dickson.

Thank you, Andrew for confirming that they are there, however I received a reply from SP stating" Following your search criteria, I found this result ; 1881 GEMMELL Helen F 1 Dwelling; 130 Lambhill St, Govan, Lanark, Scotland. If this is not the correct image, then I am afraid you will need to contact GROS as they are responsible for records. Regards Alison " She is from a different family. I don't know what to do as Annette M has found them and I have tried again without success. Regards John.

Hello John,

The Helen Gemmell I found on SP is probably the one quoted above.

The Rose Gemmell I found is not 33 years of age.

Apologies for confusion.

Regards,
Annette M

Annette, Thank you for coming back I was beginning to wonder what Iwas doing wrong, but I am curious as to why my relatives , and some other inmates whom I tried did not appear. There are 874 people listed at Govan Union Workhouse. I shall now contact GROS. Regards John.

1881 census Gemmell

Post by jd0110748 » Fri Aug 12, 2005 5:05 pm

I have received word back from GROS, that my relatives are " definately in the census and we have them in our indexes here so should be showing up on line as site has same contents, you are quite right they are not showing in the indexes. unfortuneately the 1881 census as it is on the site at the moment is a transcript of our records done by the old church, so we can't actually change this, we are aware that there are one or two discrepancies in the mormon transcription. What I will do is refund you the credits and send an unofficialcopy of the actual census page by post. Many apologies for inconvenience caused by this ommision and thank you for your continuing interest in our records, regards Eileen Thompson " so I still don't know why my relatives didn't show, or what the old church has to do with anything. At least I appreciate the quickness of a reply. John.
