Raymond,

I checked the IGI for your batch number and that is an Alexander Gemmell born in 1859 to Alexander Gemmell and Margaret Stewart.

I have no way of knowing which Margaret is the one on the 1881 Census in the previous post, but here is the same family in 1861 and there is an Alexander Jr. born about 1859. (Edit: This Alexander Jr. was born in Irvine, Ayr according to the census. The one in your batch number listing was also born in Irvine, Ayr.)

If this Alexander is married to Margaret Stewart, then there is a connection to my family and I have a lot of information. Those censuses are the ones I have for that couple.

They had a daughter Jane born 1855 who married a John Carson, who is related to me. 1855 was a good year!

Hi Raymond,

No, there is no William Gemmell in my tree at all.

Alexander Gemmell was born about 1830, Co. Antrim, the son of John Gemmell and Mary Galt, and was in Irvine Ayr by 1853 in time to marry Margaret Stewart. She was born in Londonderry and was in Irvine on the 1851 census with her parents Arthur Stewart and Jane Campbell.

There is no connection to Kilbirnie as far as I know.

Hi Nina,
Thank you again for your reply, Its just that i am trying to work back from the death of my Grandfather who died in the Great War...It is my understanding that my Grandfather had two brothers who also left Renfrewshire to enlist in the army in the Manchester area and thought their may have been a link with your family...I am however awaiting more info. from the Regiment.

Regards
Raymond :)

Hi Raymond,

What is your grandfather's name? Do you know the names of your grandfather's parents? Where they all lived? The approximate birth year of your grandfather or his brothers? Your grandfather's wife's name and date of marriage? These clues will enable others here to help you find out more.

Hi Carol,
The info. you give is the same as i have note the spelling of Gemmell (Gemmill).. :?: As i said to Nina i am still waiting on more info from the Regiment...I know about my Grandfather but little of his family but that is the fortune of war when family are split up as in my case. One thing i did get was a copy of my Grandfathers Brothers marriage cert. and i hope that will help me find his family..

Regards
Raymond. :)
