Milligan 1851 and 1861

Post by steiner » Fri Oct 30, 2009 7:39 pm

Hi

Can anyone help?

Looking for Robert Milligan and his wife Mary in the 1851 and 1861 census in Scotland - probably Glasgow, Anderston. Robert was born in Ireland but unsure when.

Daughter Mary was born about 1840 and think there was a son James

Any help appreciated

thanks

Hi Annette

Sorry the daughter was Margaret - not Mary - born in or around Glasgow. The parents are RC and married in 1840 at Pollokshaws, Glasgow.

Mothers maiden name was MacKie - we think the daughter was born in or around Glasgow because parents married at Pollokshaws in 1840

Cannot find Robert in either the 1851 or 1861 Censuses. I have found possible entries for Mary and her mother in both,

1851
16 Landressy Street, Calton Parish
Mary Milligan 30
Mary Milligan 10
Elisabeth Milligan 6
Mathew Mulligan 9 Mo
Janet Mongas 19
Mary Mingus 2
Ann Reid 32
John Reid 6
Mary Reid 2
Fanny Crawford 50

1861
163 Canning Street, Calton Parish
Mary Milligan 40
Mary Milligan 21
Elisabeth Milligan 16
Matthew Milligan 10
Marget Milligan 6
James Milligan 3

At first I thought Robert had died before 1851 but seeing we have have Margaret born 1855 and James born 1858 it is unlikely. Robert may have been at work in 1851 and was not enumerated. A look at the birth entries for Margaret and James would help to clarify what was happening.

Could this be the family? Margaret is a bit younger than you said, so maybe it's not them:

1851
54 Piccadilly St, Anderston, Lanarkshire
Robert Mulligan, 35, Head, born Ireland, Lamplighter
Mary Mulligan, 28, Wife, born Ireland, Hous Wife
Margt Jane Mulligan, 7, Daughter, born Govan, Lanark, Scholar
Mary Mulligan, 1, Daughter, born Barony, Lanark, At Home

Regards,
Sarah

Later: Hmmm, maybe not. In 1861 the mother-in-law is in the household and her name is Elizabeth Martin. But Robert is gone by then and Mary is the Head... So whose mother is Elizabeth? :?

I think extract ftom the Anderson census info is them.

Mary, the mother's maiden name was Mackie - I winder if the "Martin" has been recorded wrongly?

Eric or Sarah

Does the census give daughter Margaret's occupation in 1861?

I too thought the family was the one Eric found but that didn't fit with Mary McKay who I thought was the mother from info at the IGI.

I do think it's the family Sarah found but the info is confusing in 1861 especially wee William.

Mary Milligan 40
Margaret Milligan 17 Cotton Winder
Mary Milligan 11
Robert Milligan 9
Agnes Milligan 4
William Milligan 1 Mo
Elizabeth Martin 70

The IGI shows 2 children to the couple -

Results for: Father: Robert Milligin, Mother: Mary Mckay
1. AGNES MILLIGAN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 20 FEB 1857 Anderston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
2. ELIZABETH MILLIGAN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 21 JUN 1855 Anderston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

So a look at Elizabeth's birth entry will give the ages and place of birth for Robert and Mary. It will also tell you how many children she had and hopefully you will be able to confirm (or not) that is the correct family on the census.

Annette

Thanks Annette.

I've looked up 1855 birth and Robert the father is indeed listed as a "lamp lighter"

In an email from relatives overseas the say that Robert was a "steamboat stoker / fireman".

There is a "Robert Mulligan" died in 1861, Glasgow I wonder if that's him
