help please 1901 census
Hi everyone,
I am looking at my husband's family tree - in particular his grandfather Peter Reynolds. Peter was born 17/06/1881 120 Thistle Street Gorbals. Parents Francis Reynolds and Margaret McCartney. I have their marriage cert 4/4/1879 Church Place Kelvin Glasgow.
I was looking for Peter on the census returns and have just missed him on the 1881 census as he was born that year - the parents are there with Hannah age 17m living in 120 Thistle St Glasgow. On the 1891 census i find them in 60 Rose St Hutchesontown with the following
Francis head 33 Railway porter
Mary? wife (is this short for Margaret) 33
Hannah 11
Peter 9
Francis 7
Caroline 5
Margaret 5 months
Charles brother 38 carrier's porter (take it brother of Francis above)
Bridget sister in law 33
James nephew 12
Susan daug 9
Annie daug 1
On the 1901 census i have 3 Francis Reynolds
1 1901 REYNOLDS FRANCIS M 1 BLANTYRE /LANARK 624/00 007/00 004
2 1901 REYNOLDS FRANCIS M 17 DENNISTOUN GLASGOW/LANARK 644/03 004/03 028
3 1901 REYNOLDS FRANCIS M 54 DENNISTOUN GLASGOW/LANARK 644/03 004/03 028
None really fit the bill as he would be 43 years old - the 17 year old could be his nephew but i can't really look at that at the moment.
Also on the 1901 census i have 3 Peter Reynolds
REYNOLDS PETER M 21 CAMBUSLANG GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 627/00 014/00 050
2 1901 REYNOLDS PETER M 16 TRADESTON GLASGOW/LANARK 644/13 013/13 033
3 1901 REYNOLDS PETER M 15 AIRDRIE OR NEW MONKLAND /LANARK 651/00 024/00 020
I used my 5 credits for the Cambuslang Peter as the family eventually settled in Wishaw and i thought it would be him but this Peter is the son of a Robert Reynolds with a family of miners.
I tried the 1901 census again and looked for Hannah Reynolds - she appears in 174 Govan St Hutchesontown age 21 Gut worker ? but unfortunately for me she is on the top of the page with a line underneath - obviously carried over from the previous page.
Could someone kindly look at the previous page for me ? i would be grateful . Could the 15 or 16 year old Peter be an error about his age? if not where is he ? he married his first wife Agnes Molloy or Malloy in 1902 (again i missed the census) he may be living with her.
I would appreciate any help with the census search.
Thanks for reading this i know it's a bit complicated.
Regards
Ailsa

Re: help please 1901 census
Hi again,
On the 1901 census, Francis Jr. is with his parents Frank and Maggie Reynolds in Glasgow Port Dundas.
None of the Peter's you listed have the correct parents and I can't see one in Scotland who does, but there is this Peter Reynolds born in Scotland on the 1901 England census:
1901 England Census 1901 England Census
Name: Peter Reynolds
Age: 19
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1882
Relation: Soldier
Gender: Male
Where born: Scotland
Civil parish: Milton
Ecclesiastical parish: Denton St Mary, St Paul and St Peter
County/Island: Kent
Country: England
Street Address:
Occupation:
Condition as to marriage:
Education:
Employment status: View image
Registration district: Gravesend
Sub-registration district: Gravesend
ED, institution, or vessel: Milton Barracks
Neighbors: View others on page
Household schedule number: 1
Household Members: Name Age
There is a long list of others living there, but no Molloy that I saw. Do you have Peter's marriage certificate?
Carol

None of these that you have listed are the family you have listed in your message above. Instead, your family can be found in 1901 as Frank (age 42) and Maggie (age 42) and three of their children - including Francis (16) in St Rollox, Glasgow. I see no obvious choices for Peter (or Patrick as a possibility) from the list of 8 results that I got for P*t*r* R*n*ld* age 16 to 22 in 1901 - he wasn't in his parents' household.
All the best,
AndrewP

Re: help please 1901 census
Hi All,
Thanks for all the help.
Carol,
It is definitely Hannah and Susan Reynolds living with the O'Connors - Catherine is maybe a sister of Margaret Reynolds. Hannah is only 21or 22 as she is 17 months old in 1881.
I do have the marriage cert of Peter Reynolds and Agnes Malloy - i have just printed it off . They married 31/12/1902 at St Francis church Glasgow - they lived at 76 Brown St Hutchesontown Glasgow. He was a Carter and she was a cotton millworker. Could he be living with the Malloys ? Can you have a look at them - her father was Patrick and mother Ellen Malloy although Patrick was deceased by the marriage date of 1902.
Then again he may have been a soldier as the last sighting of him is in 1891 when he was 9 on the census.
Andrew P,
Thanks for finding Frank and Maggie (never thought to look for a Frank -
). As he got married in 1902 he had to be in Glasgow somewhere then but where was he on census night - another mystery!
Thanks again ,
Ailsa

Re: help please 1901 census
Carol,
How odd - on the 1891 census the whole family are there in 60 Rose St - no Patrick Reynolds but Peter age 9 - I wonder if it could be a transcribe mistake ?

Forgot this: Patrick and Helen Malloy and Agnes and siblings are at 57 Thistle St. in 1891 so the families probably knew each other for a while.

Re: help please 1901 census
Carol,
There were so many of them it gets confusing
Peter's father Francis had a brother Patrick (i have them on the 1871 census in Malta St) so it could be Patrick is a cousin of Peter.
Good info on Agnes Malloy - her mother's name is Ellen Malloy m.s McKay so she must have been staying with her mother's family. I only say Malloy because it is spelled like this on all the certs.
Still none the wiser re Peter Reynolds !
Thanks again
