Census help please

Post by crayspond » Sun Nov 29, 2009 9:54 pm

Hi to all at TS,

I wonder if someone can have a look at the 1861 census for me please. I have looked at freecen but have had no luck. I am looking at
1 1861 MCCARTNEY THOMAS M 49 HIGH CHURCH GLASGOW/LANARK 644/02 065/02 005

I have him married to Caroline Brunton 2/2/1863 in Calton (from LDS) . Their daughter Margaret McCartney is my husband's gt grandmother she was born 17/04/1857. In the LDS it also has a Jemima McCartney born the same day. If this was her twin i would like to see if they show up on the 1861 census.

Thanks for reading this,

Ailsa

Hi Ailsa,
Nope, no sign of any Jemima in the household. There are just Thomas, age 49; Catherine, age 42; William, age 5; Margaret, age 3.

On Scotland's People there appears to be a Jemima McCartney born in Glasgow City in 1857. Have you checked the record? Is she on the same page as Margaret? If they were twins, it looks like wee Jemima didn't survive. :(

All the best,
Sarah

Hi Ailsa

Does the 1857 birth entry of Margaret not have Jemima on the same page? Twins are usually registered together, so should come one after the other in the birth entries on SP- sometime one is on the page before or the page after.

IGI gives both births as Birth: 17 APR 1857 Central District, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland to the same parents, who it appears married after the births, as the date given on IGI is 1863 as Ailsa stated; 02 FEB 1863 Calton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

Best wishes
Lesley

The entry that Carol found in the Index is Jemima McCartney /Brunton.
Aged 1 Year 2 months.

Thanks to all for the help and replies - as is usually the case with searching families i had went off on a tangent looking at Jemima  I am trying to do my husband 's male line and their spouse only at the moment (Francis Reynolds and Margaret McCartney) - but it is just too tempting!
I see from the census that Sarah kindly looked at - that Caroline is now changed to Catherine. Maybe it's me but they seem quite old to have only two kids at 5 and 3 but no other kids come up on a family search on LDS that i can find.
I have to conserve my credits at the moment as i have a few deaths and marriage certs to download (hoping to get some for Christmas) xmas:roll:

Thanks again for all your help,

Ailsa

Sorry to go off topic for a second - I see you are investigating the Reynolds name, in the Glasgow/Lanarkshire area!

I too have Reynolds ancestors, starting with a Patrick & Ellen (Eleanor) (Connolly) Reynolds, first seen on the 1851 Census, at Eastmuir, Shettleston, Lanarkshire. They had previously lived nearer the centre of the city, as their first son, William was given as being born in Tollcross. He was aged 1 on the 51 census - so I guess he was born in 49/50. The family lived in and around Eastmuir, thru the 61 & 71 census times, where their youngest son Joseph, was born in 1868. He was my great grandfather. They had moved to Omoa Square, by Cleland, Lanarkshire, in time for the 81 census, and stayed there until they died. However I suspect only the younger children of their large family (at least 8 over 18 years) also moved to Omoa, so the older kids probably married and stayed in the city. Could they be related to your Francis ( there is a Francis in my family too - but he moved to Omoa with his parents!). The parents are given as being born in Antrim - we think at Cushendall for Patrick, and Carnlough for Eleanor. Any of this info tie up with your Reynolds folks??

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Jane

Hi Jane,
Thanks for the post regarding your Reynolds ancestors and a possible tie in with my(husband's) relations.
If there was an connection it might be between your Patrick Reynolds first seen on the 1851 Census, at Eastmuir, Shettleston, Glasgow and our James Reynolds married to Mary Sweeney 6/1/1850 in Gorbals. This would make them roughly the same age (brothers or cousins perhaps). Unfortunately it is a parish extract and only gives one line of information, basically that they were married on that day. However from one of their children's birth cert who was born in the "magic year" of 1855 it states that the father James was born in Sligo Ireland. This is just recent information so i have not followed it up as yet.
James was 26 in 1855 (dob on his child's birth cert) which would make him born c. 1829 roughly 12 in the 1841 census below is my findings in Glasgow for 1841
8 1841 REYNOLDS JAMES M 2 BARONY GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 622/00 098/00 007
9 1841 REYNOLDS JAMES M 50 BARONY GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 622/00 097/00 007
10 1841 REYNOLDS JAMES M 18 BARONY GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 622/00 097/00 007
11 1841 REYNOLDS JAMES M 25 GLASGOW GLASGOW/LANARK 644/01 083/01 027
12 1841 REYNOLDS JAMES M 5 GORBALS GLASGOW/LANARK 644/02 076/02 001
13 1841 REYNOLDS JAMES M 7 GLASGOW GLASGOW/LANARK 644/01 072/01 011
14 1841 REYNOLDS JAMES M 20 GLASGOW GLASGOW/LANARK 644/01 147/01 011

I looked for his father Francis in the 1841 census and came up with

1 1841 REYNOLDS FRANCIS M 35 BARONY GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 622/00 211/00 021

If anyone could have a look on ancestry and see if any James Reynolds has a wife Mary with sons James and Francis (and possibly a link to Jane's Reynolds that would be a great help - i would then download it from SP.

Thanks,

Ailsa
