Looking for Strang 1861

Post by trish1 » Sat Dec 12, 2009 2:46 pm

I have found this family in 1841

1841 Scotland Fife Dunfermline 424 ED 8A page 5
Wellwood Colliery
Robert Strang 35 coal
Mary Strang 35
John Strang 15 coal M
Margaret Strang 11?
George do 9
William do 6
James do 4
Robert do 7 mo
All born in county

The person of interest is William who is married by 1861 and I have found him and his wife (& son) still in Dunfermline. On his marriage 1858 he has queried whether or not his father is still living - I am having no joy finding any of the family in 1851 - if someone has time to help my searching it would be much appreciated.

Trish

William immigrated in 1863, so he shouldn't be on the later census records (although he did return for a time in the 1870s but seems to have left again)

Carol :D
Thanks for the thought Carol but I am not interested in that information - I am simply looking for an 1851 census

I can see some of the family at Ancestry (including who I think is mother Mary Burt) in later census records but nobody in 1851!! :x

It must be driving you crazy.

Annette

Same here. I tried many different wildcard searches and found no sign of this family group.

All the best,

Many thanks for looking Annette and Andrew - I think Robert may have died before then - but Mary seems to have lived on - guess they were hiding in 1851
I've also found a possible death for 7months old Robert in 1845 but James John and William all came to Australia well after 1851 so they should be somewhere
I'll keep browsing in hope of finding someone

Sorry I didn't think to say I think I found John in 1851 still at Wellwood - did he marry a Janet Beveridge in 1848?

John Strang 25 Coal Miner
Jane Strang 24
Robert Strang 4
John Strang 1

Have you ever looked at the microfilm for Wellwood in 1851? My hunch is that they are still there but maybe the part where they are is damaged or unreadable.
I'm sure you will have seen what appears to be Margaret marrying William Simpson in July 1851 at Dunfermline. Don't suppose that gives any clues?

Annette

I didn't see the 1851 marriage - I have marriage of William (1858) who thinks his father is deceased, and a message re James married 1859 saying his father is deceased.

I've just been looking at this for a friend (not my family). I am probably more concerned than she is to link everything together, I like to have a reason for missing people - I've not seen any films, (the LDS no longer have a set of films in Sydney - given that everyone uses the net this is understandable, but sometimes browsing a film did give rewards).

As far as I have checked, John Strang married Janet Beveridge in 1846. Janet and 5 children emigrated in 1863 on board with brother in law William. John left earlier - I haven't checked the exact time yet. Your 1851 seems to be John& Janet with the right children.

Mother Mary - I think - lived to 1890. I downloaded a death certificate which almost fits, and the immigration records give her as living (latest 1875). Perhaps the family is simply scattered in 1851. Thank you for the help
