Happy New Year everyone!
Can anyone tell me how I search for an actual address on ancestry?
I've tried putting in the street name and area but I've got thousands of returns on that. Need to find 37 Morningside Drive Edinburgh.
Thanks
Aileen

I had a look at your previous post to see what year you were looking for. I'm still getting the same result when I search for 37 Morningside in 1901 - a Miller family at 37 Morningside Park.
If you just put Morningside Drive you get 388 results - so there definitley was a Drive but no number 37 listed in 1901. 35 and 39 are listed. If you look at those families to see what page they are on the schedule you'll be able figure out what page should be in between them and a browse through the 388 should find it. I would be looking for schedule 56 line 4.

Annette

Re: searching for an address on a census
Hi Aileen,
37 Morningside Drive was built by the time of the 1896 Ordnance Survey map, so the house was certainly there in 1901. That part of the street is consecutively numbered semi-detached substantial stone villas. The other side of the street had no houses, it had the long wall of the north side of Morningside Cemetery.
However, it looks like there was nobody in on census night. There were occupants in 33, 34, 35, 36, 38, 39, 40, 41 and 42, but 37 was not listed.
On Ancestry, if you search for 36 Morningside Drive (the other half of that building) you find the occupants include a father and son called Gardiner Turner (plus other members of that family) so they are easy to find on ScotlandsPeople, then you can see the page with no number 37 listed. The enumerator was supposed to have listed in the house sequence any unoccupied houses, but that was not done on this page. Maybe the enumerator missed the house out when writing up his book from the household schedules. He missed out one of the Turner family and wrote them in at the foot of the page with an arrow pointing to where that name should have been placed.
The schedule numbers were consistent, 51 to 59, with no gaps, across the house numbers given above.
All the best,
AndrewP

In the address box, put in 36 Morningside Drive, and tick the "exact" box beside that address. Try number 37 and you will get no results. For addresses with more common names, a town name (Edinburgh in this case) in the location box further up narrows that down. Then click on search for your results. If you input Morningside Drive with no number you end out with all 388 residents of Morningside Drive.
All the best,
Andrew

Had to rush back to work after my lunch break but looks like Andrew has given you your answers.
Just to confirm - when looking for an address at Ancestry you have to use the 'old search' and choose the year of the census you are looking for. The 'old search' has County and Address (where you can insert Morningside Drive) boxes to fill out.

Annette
