Hi Andrew and Annette
Sorry to be a pain but I'm still not getting the results I would like!!
I'm opening ancestry, clicking on search, and then choosing 1901 census. In the 'lived in' box I'm putting 36 Morningside Drive and further down in the 'more' box I'm typing in Edinburgh, results found NONE
I can't find an 'address' box on the page at all Andrew
Help!!!

Hi Aileen,
There are a couple of ways but this is fairly straightforward.
On the Home Page click Search - Census Records.
Near the top right click on the 'Old Search' link.
Scroll down and choose Scotland.
You will then see options to choose the year you want. Once you click on that you will see the box for the address.
Regards,
Annette

Re: searching for an address on a census
Hi Folks
A while ago I asked how i would search for an actual address on ancestry.
Annette kindly replied and said this: Just to confirm - when looking for an address at Ancestry you have to use the 'old search' and choose the year of the census you are looking for. The 'old search' has County and Address boxes to fill out.
I'm still none the wiser lol! Does anyone know how i do an 'old search' what settings do i need on ancestry and how do i change the setting?
Hope someone can help, Many thanks.

Re: searching for an address on a census
"Old search" has long gone Aileen - and it took me quite some time to recover from same
At this direct link to 1901 Scotland
http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=1101
Using what they now call the "updated search forms" - there is an address field at the bottom of the page
When I requested an exact match to 36 Morningside Drive Edinburgh I got "no find" removing the "exact" option (which I usually use because I otherwise get 100s of nonsense matches) I got many many matches BUT the ones at the top of the list are your address
Family living there is the Turner Family - Head Gardiner - a builder
Ah - the exact match works if I simply put 36 Morningside Drive in the address field - guess if that address existed in other parts of Scotland I would get multiple matches.
To get all the census records I use this link
http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/group/ukicen - UK census collection
then scroll down the page if you want to select a particular census year and location (England, Scotland, Wales, Isle of Man, Channel Islands)

Re: searching for an address on a census
It does get confusing - old search, new search, updated search - and sometimes I find heaps of options are missing and discover a button called "show advanced"
I do find ancestry useful (mainly for England, US, Canada and Australia - having family all over - not so much Scottish data) but they have the ridiculous idea that quantity is better than quality & it takes practice to hone in on what you are actually looking for. Good luck with it.
