Census on CDs .....

Post by CathieL » Sun Aug 14, 2005 7:41 pm

I am having trouble finding a family on the 1871, 1881 and 1891 census and I was wondering if there were any CDs available to buy ( I think I read that somewhere but I can't remember where.) I have already had a great deal of help from the forum and I was thinking that if there were CDs I could buy then I could quit bothering people and maybe even help someone else out. I enjoy this site very much and everyone is very nice!
Thank You
Cathie

The 1881 Census of Great Britain is available as a set of CDs from the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints. There should be a price and contact details on their website at www.familysearch.org

1871, 1891 and 1901 are available online as digital images of the census books at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk but I assume that may be where you have been searching so far. 1881 is there also, but as transcriptions rather than images.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Thank you Andrew
I found it from your link and I have ordered it, now I just have to wait two to three weeks for it to be delivered. I had been searching on SP but I kept coming up with the wrong ones and that gets costly. It will also come in handy when I start searching the other side of the family and who knows I might be able to help others now.
All I have to do now is be patient!
Thanks again
Cathie

Cathie,

You might be pleasantly surprised with an earlier delivery. I live in Canada and a good day's drive from Salt Lake City. I remember being surprised to receive the CDs within days of ordering online.

Regards,
Laura

It used to be possible to buy just the 2 Scottish 1881 CDs, but from a couple of years back or so, my understanding is that the full 1881 set of CDs has to be bought, i.e. including all the English area CDs and the national index.

The price is still very reasonable, given the number of CDs involved.

Thank you Laura, I will be watching for the mailman everyday and David you are right, the price was only $25, no sales tax and no mailing fee!
I spent two days in the LDS library in Salt Lake City a few years ago and I wish I knew then what I know now! I was researching my husband's family who were Norwegian. I found a wonderful Norwegian web site with a forum very much like this one and with the aid of an English-Norwegian dictionary plus the fact that most Norwegians speak English I was able to find the family back to 1490. That is when I got addicted to this and though it can be frustrating sometimes I love it!
Thanks again
