I usually find the 1871 transcriptions somewhat of a work of art & the one in the title is close to the best I have seen. They are surely not ocr transcriptions as there are many ?? around where someone has obviously not even been able to find a possibility. The one above is the occupation of a 23 year old servant lass, so I would guess "Kitchen Maid duties" although the last word could be something different.
I always find the 1871 much worse than any other year - haven't worked out a reason for that yet.

Hello Trish,
I’m sorry it’s taken so long to reply but I was thinking it might be in code. I’ve finally figured out that I can’t figure it out.
However, I did find something about it here http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&q ... =&gs_rfai=
All the best,
Alan

Actually I think the original reads "kitchen maid domestic" but that doesn't alter the meaning that you've already derived. As for why Ancestry can't figure these things out....well now that's the real mystery innit?
Best wishes

Hi Jean
If Alan can't find the explanation anywhere - guess it will be a mystery forever. Meanwhile on the same track I recently found a missing birth record (in Victoria, Aus). The child had been indexed under her father's occupation (He was a draper). Not sure if that is a first but it is a mystery solved.
