1901 census Holytown/Bellshill, Lanark. Can anyone access? .

Post by chasward » Sat Aug 20, 2005 3:12 pm

Ellen mcKeown, from Ballymulderg, L'derry. married Joseph McGuckin on the 13th May 1900. prior to their marriage they lived 2 closes apart at Nos. 63 & 67 Clydesdale Buildings, Holytown. Who did they live with ???
I have Ellen on 1901 census, back home in Ireland, a widow with her 8 month old son, Willy john.
I cannot find Joseph anywhere. he worked in Bellshill area as a blacksmith.
I'm hoping someone who has access to 1901 census, can tell me who they each stayed with prior to marriage, and provide another area of search. Without a name I can't check SP.
:(
family names:Ward, McArthur, McKeown, Mcguckin.

Hello Chasward

Welcome to TalkingScot!

The 1901 Census Records can be viewed at the General Register Office (GRO) in Edinburgh and copies are also available for a small fee through your local LDS Family History Center www.familysearch.org

Hi Chas,

Have you found any death record for Joseph? I had a quick look on SP. There were no deaths for Joseph M*cGuckin in 1900-1901 in Scotland. The last search I ended out with was Joseph M*cG*n*. That gave 8 results. Only one was an adult - Joseph McGrogan, age 32 in 1901 in Dennistoun. He doesn't look like a likely candidate for your man.

As Marilyn says, you can visit New Register House, Edinburgh or an LDS Family History Centre for these. Another option nearer to home for you is wait a couple of weeks and visit the Mitchell Library in Glasgow (closed until early September). You should be able to view the microfilms there. Another couple of possibilities are the main library in Hamilton and the Motherwell Heritage Centre - these should be called in advance of a visit to confirm they have the districts you are looking for.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson
