Help to transcribe place name.

Post by mvy_1 » Wed Aug 11, 2010 5:35 am

I have 2 census' and I am having a great deal of trouble trying to transcribe the Place of Birth for a particular person on them. I was wondering if there is anybody on this forum willing to have a go at transcription for me. I will need to upload the documents to the gallery, but are not sure on how to go about this. Would someone be kind enough to help me please.
Margaret.

Hi Margaret,

The TalkingScot Gallery is offline. Can you upload your images for transcribing to a photo website, such as Photobucket? (free of charge) Then insert the link(s) to the image(s) in your post here on the forum. There are always people here up for the challenge of deciphering the enumerator's handwriting.

All the best,

AndrewP

Census has been uploaded and ready for viewing. The person in question is Mary McArthur on both Census. I am wondering if anyone can figure out her place of birth as I am having trouble reading it.

Hello Margaret,

Can't make out the first one at all. A guess at the second one would be Dumblane.

Someone with better eyesite might see it differently :? .

I would agree with Dumblane for the second one. The first one says Stirlingshire - can't make out the second word, but as Dumblane is in Stirlingshire the place is presumably somewhere near Dumblane.

Hi Margaret,

In the 1861 image, it looks like: Stirlingshire, Haime

In the 1871 image, it looks like: Dumblance

So, for the 1871 image, I would agree with Frances's Dunblane.

All the best,

1851 census has a Mary McGibbon born Down, Stirling (Ancestry). So I wonder if it could be Doune (I know it's in Perthshire) not too far from Dunblane.

I wonder what she says on Archibald's 1855 birth entry?

Annette

Hi Margaret

1861......I wonder why the second word appears to be in brackets (compare with the word "cloth" at the foot of the occupations column).

1871......There seem to be 4 letters after the letter L, which would mean 2 spelling errors to get from Dumlxxxx to Dunblane.

Hi Margaret,

Image

I see what Hibee is seeing as brackets. I think these are the start of the first letter and the end of the last letter in the place name.
