1901 census Mendelsons
In the 1901 census Tily Morgan, born in Russia, was living at 36 Bridgegate in Glasgow with various family members, including her daughter Fanny. I know that Fanny Morgan married Solomon Mendelson in Glasgow in 1897 and was therefore really Fanny Mendelson. (Her husband was in America in 1901.) Also in the 1901 census was an L. Mendelson, born in Russia, also living at 36 Bridgegate. I would really like to know whether L. was a relative of Solomon’s, but I can’t tell from the Ancestry.com transcript whether the families were living near one another. The household schedule for Tily was 140 and for L. 136. Can anyone help?

Re: 1901 census Mendelsons
Hello and welcome to Talking Scot Ketzel,
136 Bridgegate would have been a tenement building like this one at 157 Bridgegate and a more general view in 1904. So the families would have lived within the same building but in different flats/apartments.
There are more photographs at The Virtual Mitchell.
I see L Mendelson's children were born at Glasgow but at the moment I'm not finding a marriage for him there to compare parents names with those of Solomon. A look at one of the children's birth entries at SP will tell you where he married.
Did Solomon return to Scotland or did Fanny follow him out to USA?
Regards,
Annette

Re: 1901 census Mendelsons
Thanks very much! I wasn't aware of the tree posting on JewishGen, but when I had a look at it, I realized that nearly all the information is a result of my own research--a relative must have posted it. My research on the family has been pretty thorough. One of the things that still mystifies me is who L. Mendelson was--whether he was related to Solomon, and what became of him. He does not seem to have immigrated to the U.S. But I guess I'm not going to get any of those answers from the 1901 census.

Re: 1901 census Mendelsons
My guess at his name would be L for Lewis (if you look at Joseph's birth entry it should give his first name).
The is a marriage in 1896 at Leeds of a Lewis Mendelson and on the same page is a Dora (could this be Lora?) Baskins. I wonder if this is the couple at Glasgow in 1901.

Thanks, Annette!
I'm sorry to be such a newbie, but I don't know how to look at Joseph' birth entry. I'm about to go away until Sunday night and will not have access to a computer during that time, but I will follow up when I return, Thanks so much for your help and interest.

There is also a possible birth for their first Son Max, as a Mendle Myer that fits.

Re: 1901 census Mendelsons
Thanks very much to both of you! If the Leeds couple is the Glasgow couple--and there's good circumstantial evidence for it--then L. can't be Solomon's brother, because his father's name was Tzvi/Hirsh/Harris, not Lazarus. A cousin, maybe. I'm off to catch a plane...
