Does anyone know of a Census For Sterling 1841/51/61 .....

Post by sheilajim » Wed Aug 24, 2005 12:35 am

Hi Everyone

I have been waiting for SP to put the Censuses for 1841/51/61 online to solve many problems, but especially for my GtGrandfather John Dunn McDonald.

According to the later Censuses, he was born in Denny, in Sterlingshire. He was married in Ayr County, Parish of Auchinleck in 1867 to Letitia Moran. His age on the Marriage Cert is 25. He strangely signs his name on the Marriage Certificate as: John Dunn! :o Yet his parents are listed as Father-John Dunn McDonald, Mother- Margaret Key or Kay( I can't make out which). On all the later Birth Certs, he signs his name as John Dunn McDonald of John D. McDonald

A few days ago, I found on SP the birth of a John Dunn McDonald-Parents John Dunn McDonald and Margaret Key- Denny, Sterlingshire, but the date was 1831! :?
This seems to be too much of a coincidence not to be him, but 10 years older than I thought. There is no way that a 35year old looks like a 25yr old.

Does anyone know where or if, I could find those early censuses?

One other thing. Is it only my imagination, but did SP earlier on have births till 1925? Now I think they have them only to 1904, though why this is so, I don't know. I wanted to look up some Aunts & Uncles.

Thanks

Sheila

Hi Sheila,

Until such time as SP has the older censuses online, then your place to find these are at your nearest LDS Family History Centre. They should be able to order the films in for you.

I don't recall the births more recent than 1904 ever being online. Marriages and deaths of that time are online. Births are covered by 100 year privacy, marriages 75 years and deaths 50 years. These apply only to online searching (in New Register House, you can see certificates up to date - currently 2003 - they take time to be approved and come into NRH).

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hi Andrew

I guess I will take another trip to the LDS Center. It is a lot closer than the NRH.
Thanks

Hey Sheila,

To save you some time looking through the microfilm, the Central Scotland Family History Society have published indexes to the 1851 returns for Stirlingshire (assuming your folk were still living there.) They all seem to be about £3 in price and may be of use. Look at http://www.csfhs.org.uk/publications.htm I bought their Falkirk indexes a couple of years ago and saved myself several hours scrolling through the film.

Best wishes,

Scott

Hi Scott

Thanks for the information. I looked at the site and there were other interesting things there too.

Anything that would cut down on the time taken is a big help. Whenever I go to the LDS Center, I always feel rushed. Nobody there is rushing me, its all in my mind, that I'm taking up space that someone else could use.

Thanks again :)
