Alexander Stewart b1848? .....

Post by Jack » Fri Aug 26, 2005 12:45 am

Hi Stewie,

I don't know if this first census is your family (got possibilities though) - but some age discrepancies with Ann & son Alexander.
Has son Alexander ever given you cause to believe he was born earlier than 1848?
According to the 1851 (if both censuses are the same family) his birth was nearer 1842.
But the 1881 also makes for an 1848 birth.

Hello Jack

Thanks for the latest on Alexander Stewart.

I will check what I have on the family and get back to you.

One thing is for definate mind you.
The family in the 1881 census is definately my lot, Young Alexander the Twin of Thomas is my grandfather, he married Jane (Jeanie) Barton on 7 Mar 1902 in Airdrie. typical family communications, when I told my sister our grandfather was a twin she said she knew and had met him a few times, I believe he may have lived out Edinburgh way, but not sure yet as I have no details on him apart from his BC, he was born a few hours later than Wee Alec (as he was known as) :D
It would be interesting if the other Alex is actually the one in the family, as it would shatter my current belief that they all came from Scotland

The 1848 date is around the date I have for his fathers birth. But this may be based on the age given on his DC.

I will check the certs I have again.
Stewie

Hi Stewie,

Also in Shotts 1881 was this couple.... Maybe the parents of your G-GF Alexander (b~1848)?

It might be worthwhile looking for the family on the 1871 census in the Shotts area.
Alexander (~1848) didn't marry Mary DAVIDSON till 1877 - so a fair chance he's still with his parents.
I take it that the 1877 MC gives his parents as Alexander STEWART & Ann COURTNEY? What age was he then?

Hello Jack
Again thanks for the information on my Alexander Stewart’s (I have a few in a row).
This might be a bit of a long winded reply, but here goes. :D
As to Alexander being born in 1848, that is something I am not sure about now.
I haven’t been able to get his DC as yet, but still hoping it will be found. On his 1877 marriage certificate to Mary Davidson, he has his age as 26 years old, which would put his birth in 1851.
I will shortly be having a look at Mary Davidson’s possible 1915 DC in Larkhall, when I get some more credits?
The only other possibility is that he was the second child named Alexander, the first one dying?

As far as I know the following is pretty accurate? They are all taken from birth, marriage and death certificates, working back from the marriage of Alexander Stewart and Jane (Jeannie) Barton.
If my memory serves me right?? I was also directed on this line by some of the more experienced members of the old SP forum, as I had gotten on the wrong line with both sides when I first started this family history caper.

Alexander Stewart B. Abt. 1799?
M.
Ellen Higgins B. Abt. 1799?

Known Children:
Alexander Stewart B. Abt. 1819?

Alexander Stewart B. Abt 1819? D. 5 Jan 1886 Roughridge Shotts Aged 67yrs?
M.
Ann Courtney B. Abt. 1805? D. 14 Jun 1885 Salsburgh Shotts Aged 80yrs.

Known Children:
Alexander Stewart B. Abt. 1848 (Although this could be 1851, first Alexander may have died?).
The age on his MC would put birth at 1851?

Alexander Stewart B. Abt. 1848/51?
M. 31 Oct 1877 Shotts Alexanders age on MC. 26 years Mary 20 years.
Mary Davidson B. 7 Nov 1856 Old Monkland. D. 1915 Larkhall Lanarkshire?

Known children:
Charles Stewart (?)
Alexander Stewart B. 27 Feb 1879 Mid Calder
Thomas Stewart B. 28 Feb 1879 Mid Calder
Mary Stewart (I remember seeing her often)

Alexander Stewart B. 27 Feb 1879
M. 7 Mar 1902 Airdrie. D. 10 Sep 1958 Clarkston Airdrie
Jane Barton 7 Mar 1882 Gartness D. 11 Jul 1960 Clarkston Airdrie (Day before my mum’s birthday).

I was given this census information about an Alexander Stewart and Ann Stewart, by someone on the old SP Forum, but unfortunately I don’t have the date of the census or who provided the information.
The reason it is of possible interest is that apart from a son named Alexander, there is a daughter named Ellen, which was Ann Courtney’s mother’s maiden name – Ellen Higgins.

Hi Stewie,
Just some comments - don't know if they help or hinder!
Seems your family were in Airdrie at one point (Alexander's birthplace), but by 1861 they had settled in the Salsburgh / Shotts area.

The only Alexander STEWART i can see in 1851 (with parents Alexander & Ann) is the 9yr old born Airdrie.
(9yrs may be an error, but he IS as a scholar - so seems doubtful he could've been much younger)

Likewise in 1861 - the only one is the 13yr old born Airdrie.
(so if the 9yr old had died young, then there should've been a 3yr old in 1851 - but there isn't)

The 1871 census might help on age - did the 1877 Shotts MC have an address for Alexander?

Wife Mary DAVIDSON was a good bit younger, so maybe Alexander has shaved a few years off for his 1877 marriage (not unknown for men to do so!).

Jack

ps, there is another Alexander STEWART born about 1847 in Airdrie,
BUT parents are a James STEWART (b Glasgow 1822) & Margaret THOM (b Airdrie 1823).
(and this Alexander is accounted for in the 1851, 1861, & 1881 censuses)

Hello Andy and Jack

Thanks Andy for the census year. :D

Jack
The only address I have for the 1877 marriage is.
Alexander Stewart - Graigheads Shotts
Mary Davidson - Gartness Shotts
The family does appear to remain in this general area, except for possibly Alex and Mary Davidson who might have flitted a bit further to Larkhall, but of course my geography of the area is a bit rusty, I was only 11 when we emigrated. I do recall that we had some of the Stewarts etc living in Edinburgh, while my lot lived in Clarkston area.

You are right Alexander does appear to have been born in Airdrie about 1848.

Unfortunately the only child I have born to Alexander and Ann is the Alex born about 1848, I have no other siblings at this stage. I havent added the Helen in the line as yet.
This line is pretty accurate as it is traced back through birth, marriage and death certs for the parents listed on Alex and Janes MC.

I still have to obtain Alex's (Mary's husband) DC, but I hope to get hold of it shortly, perhaps a clue to when he died might be on Mary's DC from Larkhall when I get hold of it.
As I believe Alex's death is in a short time span of 1902 to 1915? Famous last words with a name like Alexander Stewart

Hi Stewie,

You'll have noticed that the address on the 1881 census for Alexander & Ann STEWART is Craighead, Shotts.
Could this be the same as the 1877 marriage?

1871 census - Alexander Stewart

Post by Jack » Tue Sep 06, 2005 10:13 pm

Hi Stewie,
Here's that other census.
--
1871 cens 655 Ed 4 p 22 (Shotts)
Craighead Houses.
Alexander STEWART, head, marr, 58, ironstone miner, b Ireland
Ann STEWART, wife, 59, ------- b Glasgow, LKS
Alexander STEWART, son, u/m 22, ironstone miner, b Airdrie, LKS
--
So looking more like an ~1848~ birth for son Alexander.
And stilll doesn't solve the age mystery of Alexander as 9yrs on the 1851 census.
--
A bit of a puzzle at the moment.
