My English husband’s grandfather was a William Mackness, the Mackness name is actually English. Some of his Clan moved to Scotland in the 1800’s he has the 1871 to 1901 Scottish census’s showing several of his family. The earliest record he has from Scotlandspeople is a marriage between Joseph Mackness and Bessie Montgomery in Glasgow in 1854 and the IGI records for other births etc. Could someone please could look at the 1841, 1851 and1861 census for him to see any other Mackness’s or Mackerness were in Scotland at the time.

Hello Maggie
Just a thought?
Have you also considered looking for the name McNess, although you said your long lost was English in origin. Over here in the West there was a prominent McNess family, who were early settlers, and they originated from Scotland.

Hi Maggie,
I'd think you've already got all these - and probably more. Seems they fair moved about - if these are some of the children.
Nearest possible names for Joseph in Glasgow 1851 are McINNES / McKINNES.
And looks like the family were in either the Aberdeen or Fife area for 1861?

I've just had a quick look at :
http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl
for Mackness on the 1841/51/61 census. Although these are far complete as yet there were absolutely NO results at all.
So that would suggest, to me, that you shold try some different spelling combinations [ McNess, MacNess even McKinnes, McInnes]
The spelling of names varies considerably depending on accent and familiarity on the registrars part.
Freecen is , as it's name sugests free, so have a try at different spellings and see if you find anything familiar.

The spelling can be Mackness, Mackinese, Mackerness or Mackarness and originates they say on the east coast of England. My London tree goes back to about 1780 at the moment, there is another side of the family in Northampton area that goes back to 1400 with records, we are trying to link both branches.
