lost great grandmother!!!
Hi, have started researching tree for Gray/Caldow, also Findlay/Kay. Have reached Annie Kirkpatrick who married William Gray, son of Robert Gray and Mary Gardiner in 1893. Mother was Margaret Jack (deceased) on certificate but also found death certificate for Ann Gray which showed mother was Ann Cook - doesnt look as if Ann Cook was dead at wedding - any ideas???

Hi grantotwo
...and welcome to Talking Scot.
Can you tell us who the death informant was please? It may be that whoever gave the details at the time of death of Ann Gray or Kirkpatrick did not know the name of her mother, had forgotten it or just plain got it wrong.
Happens more often than you might think!
I'd be more inclined to believe the mother's name given at the time of marriage as the bride herself will have given her mother's name. (Occasionally there are errors made at this point too, either by mistake, misheard names or occaisionally deliberately, but marriage entries are usually a more reliable source of parent names than a death entry)
Best wishes
Lesley

Re: lost great grandmother!!!
This probably won't help, but I thought I should share how "normal" it is when things get wrong. I retrieved the birth certificate for my hubby's grandfather only to find that the mother's name on the birth certificate was different than we had. Giving it some thought, I realized we had the second wife recorded.

Is this the right family in 1901 at Hamilton? -grantotwo wrote:Hi, have started researching tree for Gray/Caldow, also Findlay/Kay. William Gray 32 born Old Monkland
Annie Gray 25 born Glasgow
Robert Gray 7
William Gray 5
Thomas Gray 3
Who does Annie give as her father's name on the marriage entry and what was her address?
Like Lesley said it's more common than you would think for the wrong details to be given at a death registry but are you sure you have the correct one?

Annette

Hi thanks for all your comments - Haven't got death cert yet - its on its way - I'll check informant when I get it but I think it was my grandpa. Have marriage cert - William has parents of Robert and Mary(Gardiner) which checks out and she has parents of Thomas and Margaret (Jack) both deceased. When I get the death cert I will double check all names, dates again and get back if I cant sort it - I'll let you know the result

Re: lost great grandmother!!!
I can see Robert Gray at McCreath Street in 1891 but not Annie unfortunately.
This looks like the family of Thomas Kirkpatrick and Ann Cook in 1871(finding it difficult finding them after that even with their other 2 children born after 1871) -
Thomas Kirkpatrick 27 born Ayr, Mason
Ann Kirkpatrick 25 born Glasgow
Ann Kirkpatrick 2
James Kirkpatrick 3 MO
As you can see they have a daughter Ann who was born in 1869. Since I cannot find a death of this Ann before 1876 when Ann Kirkpatrick/Gray was born then I don't think this is your family.
What did Annie give as her father's occupation when she married?
Regards,
Annette

Re: lost great grandmother!!!
Hi everyone, just back from trying to search for Ann Kirkpatrick. Think she was born in 1869 - parents Thomas Douglas (mason journeyman)and Ann ms Cook - the informant was my grandpa and I know this is right because its the same address and up till he died he stayed there. She was born at 15 Foundry Open? in Gallowgate in Glasgow - Parents were married 24/12/1867 in Glasgow. The address on the death cert seems to be the same as where my mother think she stayed so still at a loss to know where Margaret Jack came from. Cannot find any record of either death of Ann or remarriage to Margaret so still stuck. Going back in middle Feb so any further help would be useful to progress this - Thanks

Re: lost great grandmother!!!
Hi all, sorry it took so long to get back to you all. I am close to finally giving this up as a bad job - Death Cert is informed by my Granpa (isignature and address verified) so tracing this back, Thomas died ten years before Annies wedding and was informed by Ann Cook (his lawful wife) - I can only assume Margaret Jack was a 'bidie in' - still looking as Thomas died at 401 Eastern Western Road which was a SA care home - waiting for info from them as to whether he had still been living with Ann or maybe with Margaret - Thanks again for all your help
