Forbes 1901

Post by Morag » Tue Mar 22, 2011 5:10 pm

Hi

I need some help finding a couple in 1901.
John Forbes born 10 Dec 1868 Glasgow
Wilhelmina Forbes ( maiden name Sime/Syme ) born abt 1876 Dundee
They married in Glasgow in July 1898 - don't know if they had any children.John was a warehouse packer
They both died in Glasgow - John in 1947 , and Wilhelmina in 1937. Both their extended families remained in the Glasgow area , so I am assuming that they did as well - but have also looked elsewhere in UK. There is one couple with the right names and ages in Barry , but is not them.
I have looked at various variants of Wilhelmina , and John Forbes is quite common - but they seem to have vanished !
Any help would be gratefully accepted.
Thanks
Morag

Thanks for that Carol - but it's not her.
The one I'm looking for had parents James Sime & Margaret Walker. She was the eldest child and the family moved from Dundee to Glasgow sometime between 1878 & 1883.I have found her parents still in Glasgow in 1901. The one you found had parents David Sime & Christina McGregor. There is a similarity in names , so I am thinking that there is a connection - so that has given me something to investigate.
Thanks again and I will keep searching - hopefully they will turn up with a squad of children in 1911 !

Hello Morag and Carol,
This doesn't help for 1901, but here they are in 1881, so you can at least narrow the window of time when they came to Glasgow. They are listed as boarders in Margaret's mother's house. Looks like wee Margaret didn't survive until 1891, but her birth in Glasgow gives you the earliest mention of their move there.

1881
31 Gourlay Street, Glasgow Springburn
Elizabeth Walker, 54, Head, born Dysart, Fifeshire
James Syme, 28, Boarder, born Burntisland, Fifeshire, Ship Carpenter
Margaret Syme, 25, Boarder, born Dundee, Fifeshire
Wilhelmina S W Syme, 5, Boarder, born Dundee, Fifeshire
Elizabeth B Syme, 3, Boarder, born Dundee, Fifeshire
Margaret W Syme, 7 Mo, Boarder, born Glasgow

Regards,
Sarah

I meant to look for them while I was at The Mitchell today and forgot!! I see John's mother was a washerwoman in 1901 so there is a chance she made a poorhouse application where she may give a location for John.

I won't get there again till after the 1911 census is released and hopefully you'll find them on that .................certainly a mystery though. :?

Regards,
Annette

Thanks for all the suggestions - they have given some things to work on.
I hadn't thought of poor relief Annette - John's mother Catherine is a whole other story ! She is the direct ancestor of my husband. One one her sons had made up a 2nd husband for her who he mentioned on his marriage certificate - none of the other children did ( they all married around the same time ), there is nothing on Scotland's People and no mention of the mystery man on her death in 1918. She must have taken up with this man , and her son decided it made her more respectable to his new wife if he said she was married ! Unfortunately it all happened in between censuses , so we can't find any details of him.
Thanks again
Morag
