Any suggestions please?

Post by steiner » Tue Apr 05, 2011 7:55 pm

Hi all

Just searched the 1911 census for a ROBERT BACH or BACK born 1858 Edinburgh and single under noth spellings. No results generated.

Anyone got any suggestions for other ways of searching for him?

thanks

Way too many Becks, I'm afraid :( But it's a likely mistake. Do you have his death cert and know for certain that he survived until 1911?

Best wishes,

Hi Steiner,
There are two listed as BUCH that fit the age range.
Might be worth a look.
Sorry can't look at them as I need to buy more credits having been up till late adding to the Govt Coffers searching my lot.

Thanks all - the BUCH reference is worth a try.

Search on the basis of Robert B?c? , aged 50 to 55, and there's only one match, for a 54 year old Robert BECK.

Doing the same thing in 1901 produces the same Robert BECK, plus a 43 year old Robert BACH.

Hi all

Just to say thanks for all your suggestions. I've tried them all and some others but no joy so far.

This would help us know whether it's worthwhile to look for him outside of Scotland.

Hi Sarah

I do have his death certificate. He died in Edinburgh in 1914 at Craiglockhart Poorhouse although his usual residence was given as Grassmarket, Edinburgh.

Hi Andy,
This guy must be hidden under a rather impressive mis-transcription. If you ever do find him and it turns out to be the error of the transcriber, you should get a pile of credits back.

I just went through all the censuses following him through life, trying to get a sense of where he might be... first with his parents in 1861, then in the household of his uncle Hugh Home in 1871 & 1881. In 1901 he is a house painter boarding in Stirling, correct? Now, what I'm wondering is if he had a brief fling with married life between 1881 and 1901 and is the house painter in Edinburgh in 1891 with wife Lucy and children Robert age 2 and Robertina age 7mos? Probably none of my business... Otherwise, I don't see him in 1891.

Any chance you can get to Edinburgh or Glasgow and scroll through all the Roberts in Edinburgh?

Best of luck!
Sarah
