1851 or 1861 census lookup .....

Post by darlenesplace » Tue Aug 30, 2005 12:34 am

Would like to know if some kind soul could do an 1851 or 1861 census lookup. Name is Andrew Law or Low on either Saltmarket or Orr Street Glasgow. 1851 census would have a wife Susan and also son named William. 1861 census would just have William as Susan had passed away. Also Andrew was a Weaver by trade.
Thank you,
Darlene

Hi Darlene,

Not sure what the ages should be, but just can't see an Andrew & Susan LAW / LOW etc. together in Glasgow 1851 at all.
There is a Susan LAW (32yrs), but with a James LAW 41, Ann 8, Sarah 3 - no William though.
--
And it doesn't get any better for 1861 - can't see Andrew then either with a William.
--
If you have the house numbers i could check the street indexes when The Mitchell Library re-opens.
The family may be indexed under some other similar name - but i can't see it.

census

Hi,
Thank you for taking the time to look for me. I do have an address for 126 Saltmarket Street Glasgow, this was taken from William's marriage registration to Rose Ann Tait. I do know that they married in February 1861, not sure if they stayed at that address or not. Unfortunately I do not have ages for his parents Andrew and Susan nor do I have the house number on Orr Street.
Thank you for your response and kindness,
Darlene

Hi Darlene,

I remember the names now . William LAW & Rose Ann were at 136 Saltmarket in 1861 - there didn't appear to be a 126 (probably poor writing on MC).

Do you know if Willam's father Andrew died in Scotland?

But will check all the names at the address - just in case father Andrew was there, and is missing from the index.

census material

Post by darlenesplace » Wed Aug 31, 2005 12:35 am

Hi Jack,
It must have been the way it was written as I took it for 126, thank you for pointing that out to me. As for Andrew and Susan they are a mystery that I have been trying to solve for years with no success. I only have the names from William and Rose's marriage. Only thing that I know is Andrew-Susan-also William were born in Ireland. I have not been able to find Andrew or Susan anywhere, and was hoping maybe the census material could shed some light on things for me. Also do not know if William had any siblings either.
That is about all I have on Andrew and Susan unfortunately and I know it is not much to go on. One thing else that I do know is Andrew is listed as a weaver on William's marriage registration.
Thank you again,
Darlene

Andrew

Hi Jack,
Sorry about this. Andrew is listed as a weaver on William's death certificate and not marriage registration as I previously wrote.
Sorry about that.

Thanks Darlene,

I've taken note of 32 Orr St., and i'll have a look at the address as soon as i can.
Got a bit of a backlog to catch up on. Family Work is interfering with Family History!

Will let you know the outcome no matter what it is - Jack
