Lost - GILLIES - Father and son 1851 Census

Post by jam1255 » Wed Jul 06, 2011 12:39 pm

Hello there :)
This is my first post on TS, it has taken some investigating to get here.  As my subject says, I have lost father and son. They are both accounted for in 1841 and 1861 census!!

Where did they go in 1851....were they on the high seas!!! I believe I have exhausted all my possibilities on ancestry.com.

Here is what I have found so far on my 3x and 2x great grandfathers.

Alexander GILLIES born 1801 in Rothesay Bute , married Mary Duncan 13 Dec 1827 in Rothesay Bute. Alexander's occupation in 1841 census is listed as "cooper" Bute and 1861 "Provision Store Keeper" Glasgow Lanark.
On OPR marriage, Mary's father,Archibald Duncan (late) is noted as ship owner and Alexander noted as Ship Master.

His son, Alexander McBryde (McBride) Gillies born 21 August 1835 Rothesay, Bute, married Mary McFarlane 24 July 1860 Rothesay Bute.

1863 Alexander McBryde Gillies and Family immigrated to Victoria, Australia and in 1865/66 to Dunedin, New Zealand.

I have done variations on spelling, checked various areas within other counties, even checked England and Wales census!! Any suggestions or help how to find where they are in 1851 would be greatly appreciated.
Regards

Hey Tracey
Thanks for your welcome and for the info.
Yes ...that is the family.

It's just father and son I'm missing in 1851!!
That's pretty much all I am missing on these two. I have a beginning and an end but no middle   !!

There are a couple of other ](*,) I have.
The father of Alexander (b 1801) Daniel!
There is a Daniel and Mary in 1841 with daughters Christain and Mary. I have a feeling they are the ones but need to confirm. I have searched on Scotlandspeople for marriages/banns and births. No luck. Perhaps, Daniel born in Bute abt 1771 is the first of this family in Bute. The date of birth seems to fit. :D
As we all do just keep digging away.....
Thanks
