Thanks once again Andrew. This is a great help. I was trying to determine how long it would take to walk to the convent from 10 Woodhall Drive in the 1950's. It would appear, unless I am wrong that, Woodhall Drive and Woodhall Road are interchangeable as I have seen maps with both now. I had hoped to return to Scotland this year to check it myself but alas this year with borders closed it is not possible.

Any idea Andrew approximately when the estates on Woodhall were built? I believe these were council houses.

Hi Mark,

Woodhall Drive is a street in Juniper Green, about 30 minutes walk (according to Google Maps) from the convent by footpaths through the dell. Parts of the Juniper Green "Woodhall" streets were built for the Council. Woodhall Road, Colinton is a distance from Juniper Green and is all private housing.

The 1935 Ordnance Survey map shows the Woodhall streets of Juniper Green as part built, so that dates them around the mid-1930s.

Thanks AndrewP, the information you are providing has been invaluable in trying to uncover a mystery and family lore on a forgotten secret. My next curiosity is the location of Clerwood home on Clermiston Road and what is the acrual address. As with Good Shephard how long did it take to walk there from Woodhall Drive? Family lore tells us that granny would walk to these places often to visit a 'child" and I am trying to walk those steps.

Once again a HUGE thanks.

Hi Mark,

Google Maps says that it would take in the region of 1½ hours to walk from Woodhall Drive to Clerwood House. I trust your granny was fit, Clermiston Road is a long steep uphill from Corstorphine to Clerwood. See the following Google Maps webpage:

https://www.google.co.uk/maps/dir/Woodh ... !3e2?hl=en

Various articles can be found online about Clerwood House - not all good. It was at 96 Clermiston Road, Edinburgh, and closed in 1981. Some of the webpages imply that Clerwood House was run by Fife Council rather than Edinburgh City Council. The building is now used by the General Teaching Council for Scotland.

All the best,

AndrewP
