Unable to find Mr. David Alexander BARNES .....

Post by Dibit » Wed Sep 07, 2005 7:35 pm

Hello there, Would someone with access to the 1901 or 1911 census please do a look up for me. Or even 1871 1861. I am really new at this so I am not completely sure what is available.

I am looking for my grandfather David Alexander BARNES born 1900 +/- 5 years. I beleive he was the son of Robert BARNES(Abt 1872) married to UNKNOWN son of Robert BARNES (Abt 1846) married to Mary Jane OLIVER. I believe my Grandfather was born/lived in Dumbarton, Dunbartonshire, Scotland.

I beleive that Robert Barnes(abt 1846) and Mary Jane Oliver had three sons David BARNES, William BARNES, Robert BARNES. Robert Barnes (abt 1846) and Mary Jane OLIVER I beleive were originally from IRELAND.

Thank you

Hi Dibit,

Welcome to TalkingScot.

The UK censuses are covered by a 100 year closure rule, so the 1911 census will not be publicly available until early 2012.

The 1871 to 1901 censuses are available on a pay per view basis on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk - 1871, 1891 and 1901 censuses available as digitised images. 1881 as transcriptions (similar to LDS CDs). The 1841 to 1861 censuses are not yet available at ScotlandsPeople.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hello and welcome Dibit,

David was born in 1903 in Dumbarton.

You can view his birth entry, which will tell you his parents' names, at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

I take it you have seen the Barnes family living in Dumbarton on the 1881 census.

It looks like Mary Jane Oliver was previously married to an Archibald McFarlane and had 3 children, one of whom was Sarah Ann McFarlane born in 1855.
If you view her birth entry on SP it will tell you where in Ireland Mary Jane Oliver was born.

Good Luck,
Annette M

Hi Nelmit,

Thanks for the help.

How did you find out David Alexander BARNES was born in 1903.

Do you know his Mother's name? My Great Grandmother.

Thanks

Hi Dibit

If you have a look at the 1903 record of David's birth in Dumbarton, at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, it will show you the names of his parents, including the maiden surname of his mother, and the place and date of their marriage. That marriage register entry if it's in Scotland, will show you the names of David's grandparents, and further birth and marriage register entries, along with death register entries could get you back another 2 or 3 generations.

In fact it looks like you will find the names of the 8 great-grandparents in various Scottish records, but, beyond that, your Scottish roots become solidly Irish.

Beware of spelling variations in the surname of David Alexander BARNES' mother, as well as spelling variations in BARNES as well ...............

Along the way don't ignore what can be found for free on-line at http://www.familysearch.org/, as well as on the 1881 census CDs, - if you haven't got them, there's lots of people here who will respond to a detailed query.

Good hunting :!:

David

I have checked www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk ....great info.

I found that David Alexander BARNES was born in 1903 to Robert BARNES and Emily BARNES (nee:IRWINE).

The marriage cert for David's Parents does show his Grandparents, but it does not show the place of birth for these parents. Can someone point me in the right direction.

Thank you

Hello again dibit,

Are the parents' of Robert and Emily still alive on the marriage entry? If so then you should be able to find them on the 1901 census if they are living in the British Isles.

If not (I certainly can't see an Emily Barnes within the correct age group in Scotland) perhaps an earlier census.

If David's grandparents were married before 1875 then you should be able to find them on the IGI at www.familysearch.com

If all that fails post the details and you should get plenty of help.

Regards,
Annette M

Could this be Emily and family in 1881? Elizabeth's maiden name is Archer.
If so then her some of her older sibling are shown on the IGI as being born in Down, Ireland and one in Magheralin.

Thank you Annette,

I beleive this is my IRWINE Family. How did you know the maiden name was ARCHER, Is that info on the Census?

Yes they are both alive, (I think). It does not indicate Dec'd anywhere.

Researching David Alexander Barnes' wife Elizabeth Cullen leads me to the following.

Looking for the family of Mary BOYLE daughter of Bernard BOYLE and Agnes BOYLE (nee: CARR), from Bonhill. Does this family appear on the 1881 Census.

Thank you

Hello again,

I know Elizabeth's name was Archer because it appears on the IGI www.familysearch.com as mother of the above children.

I'm afraid I cannot find your Boyle family in Scotland in 1881. I tried searching for Bernard, Agnes and their son Bernard but no luck.
Perhaps someone else can.
