1871/1881 Census Dumfries .....

Post by Steven Dougan » Fri Sep 09, 2005 2:11 pm

Hi fellow Scots,

I am further looking for ancestors on my Mothers side, going by the name of Mitchell.

Does anyone have access to the 1881 Census for the Dumfries area.

The people I am looking for are;

James Mitchell born 10.05.1879 in Newtonairds in the Parish of Holywood, County Dumries.
His Parents James Mitchell married to Isabella Currie on the 13.11.1875 in Lochfoot, parish of Lochrutton, Stewartship of Kirkcudbright.

I would like to know if any of the above are in the 1871 or 1881 Census.

1881 in the village of Newtonairds.
1871 in the village of Donscore for James Mitchell, his father (john Mitchel/ Mother Hannah Millar) was a Farmer there apparently. and the village of Lochfoot for Isabella Currie (her Father Joseph Currie/ Mother Jane Mcdowell) was a general labourer.

I would be grateful if anyone can help.

Thankyou in advance.

Hi Steven,

Pray that none of your ancestors were in enumeration districts 13-27 of Dumfries registration district, or Dunscore registration district in 1881. These census reports are lost. They are not on microfilm, or on the LDS CDs. It is assumed that the books are missing from New Register House. On that basis, the people there won't even appear in the indexes.

For more on the missing census reports, see the following item:

http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1369

The 1871 census is available online at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk as digital images of the census report pages. The 1881 census (apart from the missing districts) is there too, but only as transcriptions, not digital images in the meantime. Some kind soul with the LDS CDs of the 1881 census may try a lookup for you, hoping that they were not in the "lost census" areas.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson
