Bishopbriggs

Post by crayspond » Sat Mar 31, 2012 12:25 pm

Hello to everyone on TS,

Does anyone know which area Bishopbriggs came under circa 1847 ? I am following a lead on a 1861 census. John Hardie is living in New Kilpatrick age 76 with his daughter Janet unmarried age 28. Underneath is a William Bell nephew age 14 born Bishopbriggs Lanarkshire. I think this lad is John's daughter Margaret Hardie married to Malcolm Bell. I can find them on the LDS site in New Kilpatrick with a son John born 1844. I think they then moved and then had William but i am finding it hard to find where Bishopbriggs comes under. Any help appreciated.

Thanks
Ailsa

Hi Ailsa,

On looking at the old Ordnance Survey maps on the National Library of Scotland's website, Bishopbriggs was on the boundary of Barony parish (Maryhill or Springburn district) and Cadder parish (Western district of). So it may depend on the exact address as to which parish or registration district your ancestor was in. New Kilpatrick was the next parish westwards of Cadder and that part of Barony.

Hi AndrewP,

The maps were very informative - thanks for the link. I now get an idea of where New Kilpatrick is in comparison to Old Kilpatrick.
I spent some time on the free cen site looking for The Bell family. Lots of Bells! I found the death cert for Margaret on TS. She died in 1881 West High St Kirkintilloch age 56 of chronic bronchitis . Widow of Malcolm Bell. Father John Hardie and mother Janet Gilfillan .As i was running out of credits i just managed to do a search on Malcolm Bell and think i found him in 1866 died age 36 Dunbarton 496/00 0163.
Back to the drawing board for son William and John!

Thanks again,

Ailsa
