Hi John:
There is a death record for Ann Dewar born 1892 +/- 1 between 1901 and 1911 on ScotlandsPeople http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk You may be able to determine, without charge, if this Annie by entering the mother's surname.

Re: 1901 Census
The technique of searching on the mother's maiden name doesn't work reliably until 1986 as that's the year that this info was added to the index.
In this case, firstly, she's still with her parents in 1911.
So search the death index from 1911 onwards, on the basis of Ann [the search engine will give a match for 'Annie'] DEWAR, b. 1892 +/- 2 , and you will quickly find her death, - sadly yet another victim of the white plague.

Re: 1901 Census
Tracing forward from this era in the Scottish records is often quite straightforward, given that, from 1929 onwards, the birth indexes include the maiden surname of the mother; and that, from 1976 onwards, the Scottish death indexes show the maiden surname of the mother of the deceased.johnhills wrote:Thank you All I have just found her death cert on Scotlandspeople she died 3 Dec 1912 must have been around the time my Grandmother came to Australia.Still would like to hear from any of there relatives if they are out there.
As regards the latter, it's a valuable research technique, having found a marriage from the early 1900s onwards, then to search the death indexes from 1976 onwards for any records with a match to the mother's maiden surname; easily done on http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk . Researchers are often pleasantly surprised at how few matches result from this very powerful two surname cross-check search, even if a 'SMITH/BROWN' combination is involved.
As an illustration of the power of this type of cross-check surname search. - between 1855 and 1906 there are several thousand marriages of a John SMITH and several thousand marriages of a Mary BROWN, but there are just 6 marriages of a John SMITH to a Mary BROWN ! The same factor applies as regards cross-check searches using the mother's maiden surname.
If there are matches then the informant may be still alive and still at their reported address; or further forward research will lead to useful BMD details; plus telephone and/or voters roll records.

All I have to do is trace the rest of my grand mothers siblings wherever they went.
