1861 Census Cowie family

Post by jaykim » Sat May 12, 2012 6:22 pm

I was just going through my family tree and noticed that I do not have the 1861 census for my family. Can anyone help me please? The family I am looking for would possibly have the following persons and would be living in Old or New Monkland, Lanarkshire. The information below has been copied from the 1851 census. Agnes died in 1867 in New Monkland. I also know that it is possible that her children could have moved out in the 10 year period. Any help would be appreciated.

COWIE Agnes Head W F 58 No Prof Home Duties Now Pauper Lanarkshire - Old Monkland
COWIE James Son U M 21 Pit Roadsman Lanarkshire - Old Monkland
COWIE Marion Dau U F 19 Farm Labourer Lanarkshire - Old Monkland
COWIE George Son U M 16 Horse Driver Pit Lanarkshire - Old Monkland
COWIE William Son U M 10 Scholar Lanarkshire - Old Monkland
COWIE Archd Grnson U M 8 Scholar Lanarkshire - Old Monkland Daughter's Son.

Hi jaykim,

According to Ancestry:

1861, living at 'House near Rochsilloch Brick The', New Monkland
Agnes Cowie, age 69, born c1792, Head, Widow
William Cowie, age 21, son, born c1840, Coal Miner

Probably the House near Rochsolloch Brick Works?

There's a marriage on the IGI (www.familysearch.org) for Marion Cowie and William Donaldson on 1st August 1852 at Old Monkland.
(Batch No: M11652-5)

3 Marriages for various James Cowies - 1 in Old Monkland on 18th December 1853 to Robina Bell (Batch No: M11652-5)

Looks like James and George are together in 1861 at 1164 Westfield West Row, New Monkland -

James Cowie 31 born N Monkland (later census records show Old Monkland), Manager Coal
Elizabeth Cowie 26
Janet Cowie 7
Agnes Cowie 5
Elizabeth Cowie 1
George Cowie 27 born Old Monkland, Boarder, Engine Worker
Willm Hume

There appears to be 2 James Cowies born around 1830 at Old Monkland but I'm opting for this one (married to Elizabeth Reid) as he named his 2nd daughter Agnes. A look at the marriage should confirm.

Annette

The fact that there is a brother George of the correct age helps greatly.

Unfortunately the marriage between James and Elizabeth was in 1854 so that there's only an OPR entry that doesn't help.

However, James's death register entry shows his parents as Archibald CURRIE and Agnes CURRIE MS AITKEN.

Sorry to everyone that replied to my posts. I didn't get any notification that there were replies in my inbox! So a very belated thank all you to all of you for finding the 1861 Census for me. Those were the right census families. James Cowie married Elisabeth Russell Reid and the children match. The death certificate for James Cowie i obtained from scotlandspeople. There is still a lot of work to do with this family as it is so big! Thank you again for all your help. I will now go and make sure I turn on my notifications #-o
