Great great grandfather's brothers?

Post by littlealison » Sat Aug 25, 2012 10:54 am

I'm still trying to find out how many brothers my gggrandfather had!
Originally I was sent records by a relative for four sons of Thomas Little born in Glasgow - three of whom seem to have died. Never found any sisters.
That's John (My gggf the bottlemaker) b 1812,
Andrew - 1814, Samuel - 1816 (died in infancy), and Samuel - 1827. (No further records.)

Now I have Andrew b 1830 in Dumbarton, same parents - and George b about 1824 in Glasgow, whose son George turns up as a nephew at John's funeral in 1889. (A lot of detective work here, but I am fairly sure of George.) Both bottlemakers.

Now I have found a Thomas, who is in FamilySearch as born in Dumbartonshire in 1821.
He's a journeyman bottlemaker in Alloa in the 1841 census, and the puzzle is that he doesn't appear in the Ancestry census for 1841 and he doesn't appear later anywhere. There's no image available in FS....so I don't have the household.
The family does have connections with Alloa, John had a child there in 1838.
I guess he could have emigrated or died.......anyone got ideas?

Have you not looked at Scotlands people for the 1841 census ? There's only 1 hit for a Thomas Little in Alloa there, that will give you the rest of the household and the orignal document.

Freecen has the transcription:
Piece: SCT1841/465 Place: Alloa -Clackmannanshire Enumeration District: 5
Civil Parish: Alloa Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 3 Page: 13
Address: Glass Works
Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
DUNCAN Alexander M 30 Bottle Maker Journeyman Outside Census County (1841)
DUNCAN Mary F 25 Clackmannanshire
DUNCAN David M 3 Outside Census County (1841)
DUNCAN Henry M 1 Clackmannanshire
LITTLE Thomas M 20 Bottle Maker Journeyman Outside Census County (1841)
On freecen you can go back and forward through the neighbouring households too, dozens of families living at the Glass Works -though not all of them glassworkers!

I take it this is your John:
Piece: SCT1841/496 Place: Dumbarton -Dunbartonshire Enumeration District: 5
Civil Parish: Dumbarton Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: Dumbarton
Folio: 5 Page: 3
Address: Church Street
Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
LITTLE John M 25 Publican & Bottlemaker Outside Census County (1841)
LITTLE Isabella F 25 Outside Census County (1841)
LITTLE Elizabeth F 3 Outside Census County (1841)
LITTLE John (Jr) M 3m Dunbartonshire
MORRISON Margt. F 16 Dunbartonshire
OBRIEN Catherine F 15 Female Servant Dunbartonshire

I haven't been on ScotlandsPeople. Yet! I find it a bit offputting. FreeCen though is a site I'd forgotten about - I think when i met it before, a while back, I didn't find much. Thanks for reminding me!

So Thomas was a lodger - he would be. I don't know where to go from that, as he just isn't there in 1851...and no Alloa Census. Death, emigration. Possibly Ireland where some of the family went, but no real evidence.
Yes, that's John. I have traced him through a second marriage to his funeral in 1889. Elizabeth of course is the one born in Alloa, but it was two years before I found her in 1851, with her aunt!

FreeCen has proved very useful to find statistics of how many men were employed in the glassworks in Dumbarton, Alloa and Glasgow - gives some idea of how big the different works were.
Thank you, WilmaM - Alison.

Yes, I don't think notifications are sent for one's own posts, since it is only the posts that have been made since you, yourself, were last on that topic that trigger the notification. You should get a notification of my post now :D

Best wishes,
Sarah
