Spelling variations for William Ronald .....

Post by kilmuir23 » Mon Sep 12, 2005 9:43 pm

Could anyone suggest any other ways of looking for the name William Ronald in the 1871 census, probably for either Dalkeith or Edinburgh. I have tried every way I can think of Ronalds, Ranald, Rannald etc but no luck on anything. He should be living with his wife Elisabeth/Elizabeth and possibly son Norman, his other son George married a Bridget Burke in 1870 but I can't find him either. I did manage to find my gggrandfather Alexander though.
Elisabeth was born in Dalkeith as were their 3 sons, William I'm not sure, on the 1841 census for Dalkeith it states Midlothian.William died in Edinburgh 1879 age 68 so I'm guessing he was born around 1811/12 which would make him about 59/60 in 1871.His occupation was a journeyman painter.Any suggestions at all would be really helpful.

Hi Kilmuir23,

The only suggestion that I can offer is the use of wildcards. Such as R*n*ld* (to cover for any vowel variations; single/double "n"; with or without "s") for the surname. Firstname W* should cover for variations of Will, William, Wm etc. I hope the result is not too long a list(I haven't tried it to see.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Thanks AndrewP,
I've tried W* R*n*ld*,age 50 to 65. Still no luck, 6 possibles came up 3 I'd already looked at, I've had a look at the other 3 with no joy. I'll try the same for Elisabeth, George and Norman.

Hello Kilmuir23,

I tried everything that I could think of but there was no trace of any that you have not found already.

Hi folks,

An real outside chance! - could Ronald have mis-typed into the index as Donald?
I know i've hit the 'D' instead of the 'R' very often!

Thanks Sporran,
I've tried the same for his birth with no luck either. I guess I'll have to wait for the 1851/61 census to come online.I might be able to find some of them then.

Hello Jack
I've just had a quick look at that possibility, I'll have a good look at them in the morning.

Hello Kilmuir23,

I do not claim infallibility, but I had already looked at *n*ld. I noticed that Bridget retained her maiden name of Burk(e) in 1881, but I can not find her in 1871 under anything.

My Lamont father, son, and latter's future wife Margaret Bell should have been in the Canongate district for the 1871 census, but I can not find them. I am a little suspicious of the coverage of Canongate but I have no evidence. I hope to run some tests if I have time on my next visit to Edinburgh in November.

Hello Sporran,
I think you've hit the nail on the head. I was beginning to think that the family had moved out of the country. On looking again at George and Bridget's marriage cert George was living at 367 or 369 Canongate. I did try Bridget's maiden name in 1871 as well. So along with searching the other suggestions and also every name we were called when we moved down here ( as people coudn't seem to understand that Ronald was a surname) Reynolds, Roland, Rendal etc I am going to stop searching for them in 1871. Thanks to yourself, Jack and AndrewP for your help.

Hi Kilmuir
Had a wee look at this one.
And I have had problems with Cannongate on the 1871 as well.
Did you find Elizabeth Ronald on the 1881 Census?
I have all Elizabeth Stenhouse deaths on file.
