Hello
I have just downloaded the 1891 census for a Mary Elizabeth Allardice but I need help to figure out where she was.
She is included amongst a list of women and all classed as lunatics. It would seem that the women have varying degrees of wealth, my own Mary Elizabeth has private means. There is no ED but when I first searched, the location was Perth. That's it, I don't want to spend loads of credits trying to find the name of the Institution /hospital but wondered if anyone knew of Ayslums in Perth. I did go to previous page but was asked for credits and went no further.
Any help or advice appreciated.

Hi Patsy
In Perth there was James Murray's Royal Asylum for Lunatics. It opened about 1827 and continued until at least 1947. The local archives at the A K Bell Library in Perth have some information, but I'm not sure exactly what.
Hope this helps.

After similar queries from many people, the subject of institutional entires was taken up by the ScotlandsPeople User Group, and a free facility to look at the first few pages of the enumeration book was added a year or more ago after paying to view a page. This allowed the institution involved to be identified for no additional charge, as well as showing the detailed description of the area covered by the enumeration district involved.
For some reason, at the site "upgrade" at the end of May, this facility disappeared. At the last User Group meeting we were promised that this facility would be restored, hopefully in the near future ..........
In the meantime, since it is SP's expressed intention to restore the facility I'd recommend that you submit a contact form on the SP site asking to be given the information.

1891 Census mental Institution. & Search Lists
Thanks Jacky and David for your help, I have submitted a form and I'll now wait and see what happens.
Second one I've done today. When I click on my previous search list to see what I want to download, on some names I'm getting bumped off and told that I may have to log in again. Been happening all week at odd times so another form was sent in. Anyone else noticed this problem.
Which, while I'm on the subject how do people cope with their search lists. Even looking for a testament is now added to the list and it drives me nuts figuring out which rellie I want to d/l and which is not related to me.
Probably the wrong forum but I'm on a roll here.

Given another problem reported in terms of viewing new images, this doesn't surprise me.....Patsy wrote:Thanks Jacky and David for your help, I have submitted a form and I'll now wait and see what happens.

1901 Census image
I was looking for Henry Hughes on the 1901 Census for Govan. What I got was a list of names, obviously from an institution but how could I find out where it was?
I submitted a contact form to Scotlands People with the Gros Data number but they told me to contact GRO which I did. The reply said there was a facility to browse the Census to find the front page, I can't find it. I've contacted them again but so far no reply.

I suggest that you respond to GROS pointing out that the ability to "browse" the first few pages of an enumeration book at no extra cost after paying to view an image in the main body of the enumeration book is no longer available on SP..........

1901 Census
David
I've had a reply this afternoon from Eileen Thomson at Scotlands People to inform me that the institution is Govan Poorhouse.
She also informs me that I could find the front page by using 'Previous Page' but this would use five credits every time which is why I just wanted to see the front page as we could do before.

Which is exactly why the facility was added to go direct to the header pages for freeLindaMc wrote:David

One of these days we'll get the facility back, - the only question is when
