I have a John Bryson aged 60 and wife Elizabeth aged 52, living in cambuslang, lanark in the 1851 census.
I know - Elizabeth was a widow in 1876 when a marriage said the bride was "brought up" by Elizabeth who died in 1877 in Cambuslang (maiden name Duncan, age 78)
I cannot find John or Elizabeth in any other census & as it seems they didn't move very far, I thought someone else may be more successful in the search.
I think I have found John's death in Cambuslang - 1860 - so would only be Elizabeth who I can't find.

Re: Bryson 1861/71
Hi Trish,
Could John have been a farmer in 1841?
Wellshot Offices, Cambuslang, Lanarkshire
John Bryson, 50, born Lanarkshire, Farmer
Elizth Bryson, 40, born Lanarkshire
Elizth Davie, 70, born Lanarkshire, Pauper
Janet Hinshaw, 17, born Lanarkshire, F S
What was the name of the girl who was brought up by Elizabeth? She might help the search.
Best wishes,
Sarah

Re: Bryson 1861/71
Hi Sarah - yes - that's them in 1841 - he was listed as a farmer on the 1876 marriage - but a carter in 1851 and a carter on his death certificate.
The lass was Janet Martin. She was born c. 1857 - in 1881/91 she gives her birth place as Cambuslang. I can't find a registration there - but quite a few around that time in the glasgow area. I can't find a definite Janet in 1861,71 which is why I thought finding Elizabeth in 1861/71 might help. I looking for a friend - somewhat difficult to get further back when the child doesn't know her birth parents at time of marriage.
I thought the best chance might be the Janet - 3 years old in 1861 - mother agnes - because I can't find them later and no father on the birth index for that Janet - but I think I'm probably just hoping - rather than having any proof.
1881 Janet & husband John Beattie living in Govan
children Charles 5 & Janet 9 months
1891 they have a tribe
Charles 14, Janet 10, Agnes 8, William 6, John 4, Elizabeth 2 and Martha 3 months
1901 they have added James 8 and George 5
I'm clutching at straws with the name agnes - given it wasn't on the marriage certificate. Forget that - John Beattie's parents were Charles and Agnes - fits well into the naming patterns - 1st son, 2nd daughter.
I should check for a death certificate for Janet - see what is on that. (don't easily find that either) Someone from the family came to Australia - I don't yet know when/who - best check that with the friend. I think she has the family forward from Janet - trying to go back at the minute.
Trish
PS I'm burning credits looking for Janet's death and 1911. Best find out if they stayed in Scotland! before I check too many more wrong records! - ah - looks like they arrived in Brisbane August 1911 with the youngest two.
Edit: I think I have the death in Qld - listed as Janet Martin Beattie - age out by 2 years - no parents - says she was born in Ayrshire! He husband died a few years later - so he was probably the informant??

Here's Elizabeth with a wee boarder (not Janet unfortunately) in 1871 at Cambuslang.

Re: Bryson 1861/71
Thanks Annette - I wondered about that one - Her husband died in 1860 - maybe Janet was also a "boarder" - but by 1871 she could have been working as a domestic servant.
This is not going to be an easy one - I think. On the other side of the family the death of the father of the groom - who was born in Ireland - gives his father's name - including an alias.
