While searching the internet for information on Renfrewshire I found this:
http://www.freewebs.com/renfrewcensus/
They are looking for volunteers to help transcribe census records. I'm sure there are lots of similar sites around for other areas of Scotland. I've put my hand up as willing to help. If we all did a little bit, we'd have access to records much sooner.

Been there, if you have a spare 60 hours a week and a microfilm viewer then you will be able to help otherwise stay well clear.
It will take over your life

Am there - 1841 Fife Census.
Not sure about Renfrew - but - the Fife census was supplied to me on a CD rom. So there may be no need for a microfilm viewer. Also, once again I don't know what the situation for transcribing for Renfrewshire, but in the case of Fife I had a choice of districts / numbers so I was able to select something that I felt I could handle. Every little bit helps !

Whilst I don't know the background to Drew's experience, it is unfortunate that he comes away with such negative and inaccurate views.
Especially when a minimum of effort could easily have revealed the truth.
While early census images might once have been supplied only on microfilm, all Scottish counties are now working almost exclusively from CD-ROM.
I probably put in at least as much time as any of my volunteers and 60 hours a week is arrant nonsense! Better if we stick to the facts, eh? Volunteers work at a pace that suits them, there is no pressure.
This is an enjoyable and worthwhile pastime where volunteers do a wonderful job in bringing census information to everyone for free.
Go to our website at http://www.freewebs.com/renfrewcensus and see the results for yourself. Feel free to ask me any questions you like, or check with people like Scozzie and HeatherV to see what they think.
As of July 2005 more than 2000 volunteers world-wide were working on the Free Census Project. Surely they can't all be wrong?
