I am looking to find this family in just the 1881 census. They moved to Australia in 1886. The family is George TEVENDALE and wife Isabella. They married in 1872 and had a daughter Mary in 1874. Mary was not on the immigration list and there is a big gap to the first child on the list John, who was born c1881.

It looks as though Mary died in 1874.
Hopefully someone else will find them but this is the best I can come up with.
Perhaps you'll know by their ages if this is them.

I like a nice wee puzzle now and then just to check that I can still hack it
Mary Steven TEVENDALE died in 1874 in St Peter, Dundee. John TEVENDALE was probably born in 1880 in St Peter, Dundee, but note that there were at least two TEVENDALE/TAVENDALE families producing kids in Dundee between 1872 and 1886 ............ never mind, - see later, - the TEVIOTDALEs ...........
But nary a trace of the family is there in Dundee in 1881 or elsewhere in Scotland, not even when assuming some wierd transcription and assuming that George was still a flax dresser, and using the "Neighbours - Advanced Query" function and searching on "George and Isa* and Flax* and Dundee" ......"
There is however the following entry, - found using "george and tev* and flax*" via the "Neighbours - Advanced Query" function as the search term, which would appear to match the ages of George and Isabella, and George's occupation in 1872 ........

But without some way of proving that this is Isabella Wallace FINDLAY there may never be absolute proof, unless one of the three possible matching births between 1881 and 1886 in Arbroath ties in .......... and, the gods are smiling on us today, one at least of them does
so that the family that later emigrated may in 1886 may contain a 5 year old Jane Davidson Eadie (or Eachie?) TEVENDALE (George was illegitimate and his mother's surname was DAVIDSON), a 4 year old James TEVIOTDALE and a 1 year old William McKie TEVIOTDALE, if these puir wains hidnae snuffed it prior to 1886, and the indications are that they didn't ............
So looks like the family moved back to the place of George's birth some time after wee John's birth in 1880 .........
A rather neat example of how wildcards assist a search, as, while I'd tried T*V*NDAL* and variants on that, it wasn't until I went "wider" and used T*DAL* that it became apparant that TEVENDALE was sometimes heard and recorded as TEVIOTDALE..... and much much more, -see below
George signed the vairous records with his mark, so may not have been able to check what the minister (marriage schedule) and the registrar (birth and death registers) wrote.
On reviewing all the above I think that it will be found that the move up to Arbroath was earlier than 1881 as there is the birth in Arbroath in 1880 of a John Finlay TAVIDALE
But where is wee John in 1881
No.1 possibility is the following, - Isabella's mother was Mary FINDLAY .....

...but No.2 would have required the wrong place of birth to have been reported .......... not impossible, of course
Soooo..... an even better example of the spelling variations of a surname back in the 1880s, - count them up and assess them in terms of TEVENDALE being heard and recorded as the various quite different sounding surnames (subject always to transcription variations, that is
)
See oor ancestors

Hi April
I had a quick look in the 1881 but couldn't see anything obvious - maybe I'm just having a thick moment!
However, it looks like Mary died in 1874.
This is from Scotlands People: www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
SR Deaths Search Returns:
1874 TEVENDALE MARY STEVEN F 0 ST PETER DUNDEE CITY ANGUS 282/01 0299
Best wishes

Nope ! Cos the matching birth in Arbroath in 1880 is for a "John Finlay TAVIDALE" to the correct parents ............nelmit wrote:David,DavidWW wrote:Congrats on finding this one....................nelmit wrote: Hello April,
