1841 - Dumfries/Kirkcudbright .....

Post by Ruth » Wed Sep 28, 2005 6:25 am

Hi,

Just wondering if someone can try to locate the following family in the 1841 census (this is them in 1851 from the DumGal site)

Household 18/15, 1 Mill Street Dumfries
MILLAR , Catherine - head - married - 56 - born Ireland
CAVEN , Grace - daughter - unmarried - WEAVER woollen - 21 - born Kirkpatrick Kbt
FRASER , Margaret - daughter - unmarried - WEAVER woollen - 17 - born Kirkpatrick Kbt
BOTTOMLEY , Margaret - g-daughter - 5 months - born Dumfries Dms
(plus 4 lodgers)

Unfortunately since everyone has different surnames I realise it might be difficult to locate them in the indexes.

I have a Margaret Fraser, whose death certificate shows mother is Grace Caven. I am trying to either confirm or discount this family as having some connection (obviously this Grace is not this Margaret's mother but perhaps the info on the death certificate was incorrect as it was Margaret's son-in-law who was the informant and he may have been confused about the relationships).

I've posted a more detailed and general query about this part of my tree on the Scottish People board but would be particular interested to see if any clues come out of the 1841 census.

Thanks,
Ruth

I'd urge you to look at the 1860 death of Catherine Caven/Frazer/Herron and the 1898 Grace (Bottomley) Cavan deathj for further clues.

Although is wasn't required to name spouses in 1860 Catherine is indexed using three names indicating at least two marriages.

It's possible that Grace and your Margaret were half sisters.

Strange thing is that I can't find any of them in 1881.

Grace Cavan had THREE more children in Dumfries:

John Bottomly in 1855 (hooray)

Mary Jane in 1857 and Catherine in 1860.

William Bottomley (perhaps John's father) may have married a Margaret Cardy a few years later. (William was in the habit of getting girls into trouble)

This could be John Bottomley in 1881:

Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Maybe not so strange. Half of the 1881 census for Dumfries (EDs 13-27) and also all of Dunscore is missing - and hence not on the LDS CDs.

All the best,

I'd forgotten that, Cheers!

Thought I was losing my touch!
