Looking for Susan Davie born 15 August 1827 Cardross, Dunbartonshire.
She does not seem to be in Dunbartonshire in 1851- at least I've not found her on a CD ROM census index.
She married on 2nd December 1852 in Barony Parish and the OPR enty states Barony Parish as place of residence, so I just wonder if she might already have been in the Barony area for the 1851? Does anyone have access to an index please?
Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley,
I can only see one Susan that is anywhere near in name & age in ALL Glasgow.
No more details at present though.

1851 cens 622 (585) Ed 20 p 10 (Barony - Blythswood)
Susan DAVEY 19.
(possibly with a family James & Jean McNaughton)

Hi Jack
Thanks for looking, its very kind of you. That one seems a bit young ...but I suppose anything is possible.
I think this is her in the 1841:
Cardross, En.dist 2 page 1,
James Davie 45 Lab. Yes
Susanna Davie 14 Yes
I have no idea why there seems to be just Susan and her father, but I suspect her mother may have died young and the family have dispersed. She was the second youngest child.
Best wishes

Jack - you are brilliant!
Thank you very much.
She still seems to be a bit on the young side but I think it must be her.
The surname is one of those which turns up spelt differently every time you see it! OPR at time of marriage the following year states "Davie" which seems to turn up more often than the other variations.
Thanks again.
Best wishes

Hi Lesley,
I'd be rather surprised if it wasn't your Susan - maybe James McNaughton just thought she was abt 19yrs when he filled in the form.
I notice you'd said Susan was 2nd youngest - was this meant to be 3rd youngest?
Or is Mary Dennistoun Davie of a different family? She does seem "squeezed in". These from the IGI.

Hi Jack
Yes I have the same children as you have found but had always assumed that Mary Dennistoun Davie must have died in her first year given that the following child is also called Mary. I know there are have been cases where two children have the same name and as I don't have any proof so maybe I shouldn't make assumptions! I have a copy of the OPR birth entries.
They are quite an elusive family in some ways (aren't they all?)- I don't know what happened to all of them. Many of them moved into Glasgow.
JEAN DAVIE - don't know anything about her.
JANET DAVIE - married James Smellie 1840 Glasgow, 1 known child, (John Hamilton Smillie) and d. August 1871
ANDREW DAVIE - don't know anything about him.
JOHN DAVIE - married Janet McCulloch in 1846 Paisley, 3 known children, (Jessie, James, Andrew & maybe two more: Frances & Alexander ) d. 1882
JAMES DAVIE - married Maggie Murdoch in 1863 Partick, 5 known children, (Maggie, James, Samuel, Susan, George) d. 1901
ALEXANDER DAVIE - possible sighting on 1841, Cardross, ed dist 2 page 6, Auchinfortin? Alexander Davie, 15 Ag.Lab, yes.
SUSAN DAVIE - m Daniel McNicol, 1852 Barony, 7 known children, d. 1867
MARY DENNISTOUN DAVIE - don't know anything about her.
MARY DAVIE - don't know anything about her.
And yes, thank you, I do have the 1861 with Daniel and Susan McNicol at 17 Elderslie Street. (Barony Parish, 644/8 en dist 72, page 15)
So if you do come across any who look like my "vanishing" Davies/Davy/Davey in Glasgow please let me know!
Best wishes and thanks for your help.

Greetin's Lesley frae a sunny Mount Florida the day.
I had a wee look through my own records to see if I could come up with anything for you.
I have lots from Cardross.
Nothing on Davie's though.
The Guy was really of interest as it never occured to me to think of it as a variant of Gay.
I had searched for Alexander Gay,(father John, mother Margaret MacAllum) I knew he was born in Cardross (don't ever pronounce it wrong to the natives) married to Mary McIntyre and worked in the Royal Infirmary in Glasgow.
Could never find his birth.
So after reading your post, popped all the G*y from SP in Cardross and lo and behold, there he was, Alexander Guy, born 1829.
So pleased with that one.
I noticed that Daniel McNicol was in the 1863 PO directory as a mason and builder in Elderslie street
Could not see anything else to help, but was interesting to see Susan working for a Monzie McNaughton.
Awrabest

Hi Davie
Glad you found your Alexander!
And thanks for the PO Directory info from 1863.
Are those McNaughtons some of yours?
I'd noticed the "Gay" seems to creep in once they are in Glasgow as a middle name. I still think of it as supposed to be Guy! When they are in CARdross
it is mostly GUY. Wouldn't be surprised if your Alexander links in with Susan/Susanna's lot somewhere as it doesn't seem to be that frequent a name in the area.
The furthest I have back with that Guy line is to a possible John Guy & Jean Peacock who I think may have been the parents of Susannah (mother of Susan/Susanna Davie) b. abt 1790 Cardross & possible siblings would have been Andrew 1791, Sarah Bain Guy 1798 and Jane 1801. But none of it proven. They are a mixture of Gays and Guys back then.
There is a John Guy , a Cooper, who died on 15 May 1827 aged 69 and is buried in Cardross cemetery. His wife (unnamed) died 15.2.1829 age 63 (Dunbartonshire pre 1855MIs Mitchell & Mitchell) who might be a relation? Susannah's father maybe? Her 2nd male child is called John, which would suggest this, but its all projection at the moment.
If you have any further info on Guy/Gay or Davie/ey in the Cardross area which would seem to fit I'd be very interested.
Best wishes
Lesley
Later: Just looked up your Guys on IGI children of John Guy and Mgt McCallum - childrens' names of John, Donald, Susanna and Janet. Makes it look more like there is a connection somewhere?
I think I have note of your Guy family in the 1841 for Cardross en. dist 2 page 5
- at Burnfoot.
John Guy 35 shoemaker
Margaret 30
Alexander 11
Margaret 9
Janet 5
Donald 2
John 2m
- also there at Burnfoot is a James Davie aged 15 Shoemaker
Are these yours? Cos I also have them for the 1851 - happy to type up if they are yours & you don't have them. (Wife is stated as Mgt McCallum so it must be them. )
Glad you found your Alexander!
