Help please

Post by crayspond » Tue Apr 24, 2018 5:43 pm

Hi TS,

I'm still on the trail of McPhee and Wright - i have posted on statutory records site and now have switched to census for some help.

As my Gt grandmother Catherine McPhee lost 3 sons in WW1 all without marrying and her only daughter married later in life and i can only assume they had no children. She was 40 and a spinster when she married. My Grandfather was from a previous relationship.
I thought i would now turn to Catherine McPhee m.s Wright's siblings - Her mother and father Alexander Wright and Agnes McCallum were married in 1861 in Hutchesontown Glasgow. I found from LDS they had a first child James born on 24/6/1861(I assume he died) followed by another James born 26/4/1863. Catherine (my GG) 29/11/1865. Alexander 9/8/1868. Mary 30/3/1871. Malcolm 27/7/1874 and Elizabeth around 1880.

Now it gets tricky - On 1871 census it looks like Agnes is living with her mother Mrs McCallum Head Widow at 14 or 34 Rose St with James 8, Catherine 5, Alex 2 and M (i assume Mary 3 days) husband Alexander not there.

On 1881 census in 135 Naburn St Govan Alexander is back age 41 Iron Moulder Agnes 39 with Mary 8, Malcolm 6 and Lizzie 3. No James, Catherine or Alexander. I know that Catherine had my grandfather Thomas Beveridge in 1884 then married Michael McGinty in 1891 - he died in 1892. Next 1891 census

1891 cens 644-12 Ed 41 p 14 (Govan - Gorbals)
108 Thistle St.
Agnes WRIGHT, head, 50, ------------------b Glasgow, LKS
James WRIGHT, son, 27, Iron moulder, b Glasgow, LKS
Catherine WRIGHT, daur, 24, China dealer, b Glasgow, LKS
Malcolm WRIGHT, son, 16, App Iron dresser, b Glasgow, LKS
Elizabeth WRIGHT, daur, 11, Scholar, b Glasgow, LKS
Thomas WRIGHT, gr-son, 6, -------b Glasgow, LKS
Alexander WRIGHT, 2, gr-son, 2, -----b Glasgow, LKS
James WRIGHT, gr-son, 10mos, -----b Glasgow, LKS

I was given this by someone from ancestry a while ago - assuming Alexander had died (It is hard to pinpoint a death for him). Malcolm still there 16 and Elizabeth 11. I had assumed this was my GG Catherine 24 with Thomas (Wright) age 6. The other 2 grandsons Alexander 2 and James 10 months i think are James's children but where is his wife? Again there are loads of Wrights and i have given up looking for them in the 1901 census! I have Catherine as she had by then married John McPhee.
Agnes the mother died in 1908 in Hutchesontown Catherine the witness.
Any suggestions??

Hi Ailsa,

One that is straightforward for you to find on ScotlandsPeople is the death of James Wright (born 1861). If you search for James Wright, died between 1861 and 1863, aged 0 to 2 years, all from the information that you have. That yields 12 results. Some show the mother's maiden surname, and one is the name that you would be expecting, and in the place that you would be expecting.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Ailsa,

There is a good possibility for James as a boarder in Hutchesontown, Glasgow, age 17, in the household headed by Elizabeth Douglas.

Similarly, there is a reasonable possibility for Catherine as a 14 year old boarder in Govan, Glasgow, in the household headed by Jane Cunningham.

All the best,

Malcolm Wright is an unusual name.

SP has a death for a Malcolm Wright 1893 Govan age 18.

Thanks Andrew and Alan,

I may download the Malcolm death cert when SP comes back from it's break - Sad if it is him at such a young age. The Malcolms' in my family don't fair well! Malcolm McPhee killed in WW1, this Malcolm (if it's him) and my dad's brother Malcolm died in 1950 age 28 from a heart attack.
I also saw Catherine at the Cunningham household Andrew - I'll look for a connection.

Thanks,

Ailsa

Hi Ailsa,

It's raining here again so I was looking at Scotland's People this morning. I found a James Wright who fits the facts for Catherine's brother on the 1911 census. He and wife Mary and son James 18, were living in Govan, Hutchistoun at 130 Gilmour St. The census says they were married for 19 years and that James was their only child born alive and still living. James Senior was still an iron moulder age 47. Mary was 39. After that I went looking for his marriage. The census said that they had been married 19 years so it wasn't hard too find.

James and Mary Sheridan were married Dec. 31st, 1891. The marriage was registered Jan. 1st, 1892 in Gorbals. Both Alexander Wright and Agnes McCallum Wright were alive at the time of the marriage

Hope this is helpful!

Hi Carol
I didn't think I would ever say 'I'm glad it's raining' ! Seriously - thanks for finding this for me. I recognised Gilmour St from somewhere - and after checking my file I see it's where Agnes Wright James's mother was when she died in 1908. She was at no 10.
I think the confusion has been on the 1891 census at 108 Thistle St. James is there age 27 iron moulder. We now know this is the year leading to his marriage. I assumed the two kids at the end of the census Alexander 2 and James 10 months were his. I wonder who they belonged to?
Great work finding him and the marriage!

Hi again,

I'm wondering if Alexander 2 and James 10 months were Catherine's by Beveridge? It's hard to tell because even though the census labels them as grand children they might not have been. It was not unusual for people to take in children of other family members and fib a little when the census taker came around. I have had this happen a couple of times in my family search.

Hi Carol,

Catherine had Thomas to David Beveridge in 1884 - David then married Rachel Mays in 1886. Shortly after that they went to the USA settling in Hartford Connecticut. Alexander had to be born 1888 or 1889.
She did marry Michael McGinty in 1891Gorbals. He died in 1892. Now you've got me wondering....
